Description
- Description
- The purpose of this project is to develop a novel biochar-based treatment platform to deconstruct and defluorinate per- and polyfluoralkyl substances (PFAS) from drinking water. Activities:the objectives of the research are to (1) synthetize, characterize, and select the best biochar-enabled platforms; 2) investigate the effects of water matrices on the destruction and defluorination of C4-C6 PFAS by the best biochar-enabled platforms; and 3) regenerate and reuse the biochar-enabled platforms for PFAS degradation to further lower down the treatment costs and achieve sustainability, while minimizing environmental footprint of the treatment platform. Subrecipient:tuskegee university will receive a subaward for $24,994. DR. Jafarinejad will recruit two undergrad students who will spend one summer working at the PIS lab to learn PFAS destruction technology. Tuskegee university will then facilitate the PFAS destruction technology to the alabama black belt region.outcomes:deliverables include annual and final reports, as well as peer reviewed articles, degradation platform operation manuals, and demonstrations. Outcomes include the potential to destruct short-chain PFAS at high defluorination rates which will have the ability to supply the public with clean and safe drinking water in a cost effective manner through the innovative use of agricultural wastes. Direct beneficiaries of the program include state and local governments, human health, the environment and the general public. The fiscal line details for this action are shown in whole dollars.
