Description
The goal of the project is to create highly active catalysts for fenton like reactions with tunable surface charge for enhanced adsorption of per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water.activities:the specific objectives are to: 1) synthesize mixed metal - iron based nanostructured catalysts, following an iron replacement reaction in aqueous media; 2) investigate adsorption capacity and mechanisms of pfoa to the nanostructured iron oxide materials (iron and mixed metal) and 3) evaluate the continuous filtration/degradation reaction process for removal of pfoa by ceramic membranes coated with nanostructured iron oxide materials (iron and mixed metal).subrecipient:no subawards are included in this assistance agreement.outcomes:deliverables include annual and final reports. The potential outcome of the project is improvement in drinking water quality for the affected population by testing a prototype for a hybrid filtration/reaction membrane system that is capable of removing PFAS from drinking water. Direct beneficiaries of this project will be rural municipalities, communities, and individuals in areas affected by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances contamination, human health, the environment, and the general public.
