Description
- Description
- The purpose of this project is to develop a geochemical compatibility framework for enhanced aquifer recharge (ear) suitability assessments that evaluates contaminant (metals, salts, pesticides) mobilization from source waters.activities:the specific objectives are 1) to evaluate the quantity and quality of excess surface water and wastewater discharge that is available for recharge, 2) to assess geochemical, surface, and hydrogeologic conditions for recharge suitability, 3) to calculate contaminant risk scores based on spatial data, modeling tools, and potential shifts in geochemistry during enhanced recharge, and 4) to determine regional site suitability for enhanced recharge using a combination of source water availability, aquifer hydrogeology, and contaminant mobilization risks. Subrecipient:university of california, davis ($316,845) will lead research task 1: assessment of various source waters, which is focused on evaluating the quantity and quality of excess surface water (stormwater, floodwater) and wastewater discharges available for recharge in the watersheds overlying key regional aquifers across the united states (US). DR. Dahlke's lab will also contribute to research task 2: assessment of ambient aquifer conditions, which focuses on assessing ambient geochemical conditions, relevant surface conditions (e.g., agrochemical use), and hydrogeologic suitability of key regional aquifers across the US. University of texas, austin's ($309,000) DR. Bridget r. Scanlon will lead the evaluation of ambient aquifer conditions for the proposal. This work will leverage the research she previously led for the U.S. Geological survey (USGS) under the powell research program relating aquifer status to grace satellite data focusing on spatiotemporal variability in water storage. Ground water protection council ($171,099) will be to manage the communications and engagement processes in three key areas. 1) provide guidance document and dashboard publication assistance. 2) provide three facilitated communication opportunities, via online seminar and/or face-to-face meetings with the targeted community, to introduce project and gather feedback on design and content, provide an opportunity to allow for feedback on the development of the dashboard tool, and provide for opportunities to disseminate the results of the research and communicate availability and use of the dashboard tool. 3) provide public access to the guidance document, dashboard tool, data, and reference information developed for this project online via the gwpc ASR-MAR workgroup's online library. Outcomes:deliverables of this project include a final technical report, framework guidance for enhanced aquifer recharge operations, and an interactive web-based mapping tool for recharge suitability sites. Intended beneficiaries of this project include water regulating officials, the general public, and human health and the environment.
