Description

The saint regis mohawk tribe air quality program and the indian health services the purpose of this american rescue plan-funded grant is to use innovative outreach and education materials and activities to engage community members in studying and remediating air quality issues in their home. This project will include three phases. 1) education and outreach on impacts of air quality using culturally relevant outreach materials including infographics, explainer videos, leveraging community events and working with tribal health agencies, to identify community members with existing health issues to participate in the project. 2) provide indoor air quality monitors, training and technical support to monitor the quality of the indoor air in their homes. 3) for community members where air quality issues are found the tribe will work with other resources such as department of housing and urban development (HUD), and other resources to mitigate indoor air quality. Akwesasne is located in the northern portion of new york state which means that six months out of the year are in closed home/office/school conditions so the in quality of the air in homes become more important. Activities:the saint regis mohawk tribe air quality program and the indian health services (IHS) will work with a subcontractor to develop innovative and culturally relevant mechanisms to target outreach and education on the importance of indoor air quality impacts on public health particularly those with underlying health conditions (elders, people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd), diabetes etc.). Some of these activities can include culturally relevant explainer videos, information graphics, meetings in churches and other public meetings. Interest community members will be invited to participate in a indoor air quality monitoring research activity. The saint regis mohawk tribe air quality program proposes to purchase up to 65 awair indoor air quality monitors (25 omni and 40 element) to be set up in the homes of participating community members and tribal offices. The awair omni checks for 7 parameters: temperature, relative humidity, total volatile organic compounds (tvoc's), particulate matter, carbon dioxide, light and noise. The awair element check for 5 parameters: temperature, relative humidity, tvoc's, particulate matter and carbon dioxide each of the monitors are equipped with sensors that have been calibrated and tested for accurateness and precision. They also come with a 3-year warranty for any and all issues that may happen from sensor failure to accidental damage. IT also comes with a support person to answer questions as well as troubleshoot. The dashboard, that can be viewed online, will allow participants to understand and manage to monitor the indoor air quality in their homes and offices. A map can be created to show where the units are located. The dashboard also allows access to different site locations. Subrecipient:no subawards are included in this assistance agreement.outcomes:the awair element has an online dashboard that shows the reading in real time. Because IT is real time adjustments can be made in the participants homes when there are issues. Once the issues are addressed IT will also show the changes in real time. Knowing that changes can be made and instantaneous readings show better health of the indoor air quality, allows for the tracking of positive outcomes within the participants homes. The awair omni has an online dashboard that can be viewed online allowing the community to view the air quality tribal offices. As with the awair element all data is in real time so when any changes to the air quality happen IT is noticeable. The awair omni also monitors the light and noise of offices so that you can be sure light and noise are suitable for the community and staff. The monitors will be installed and maintained by the staff and parents as well as the saint regis mohawk trip air QUA
