DESCRIPTION:THE PURPOSE OF THIS ARP GRANT TO THE SANTA MONICA BAY RESTORATION FOUNDATION (TBF) IS TO PARTNER WITH THE THREE ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER MIDDLE SCHOOLS TO DEVELOP A COMMUNITY COMPOST PROGRAM AND ESTABLISH A MODEL GREENHOUSE DISTRIBUTION PROGRAM TO GROW AND MAINTAIN PLANT AND TREE SAPLINGS FOR STUDENTS, THEIR FAMILIES, AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO UTILIZE AT THE SCHOOLS LOCATED IN SOUTH LOS ANGELES. CAA 103(B)(3): PEOPLE WITH MODERATE-TO-SEVERE OR UNCONTROLLED ASTHMA ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE HOSPITALIZED FROM COVID-19. AIR POLLUTION MAY CONTRIBUTE TO ASTHMA. BY ADDRESSING AIR POLLUTION IN CAA 103(B)(3) PROJECTS, THE CHANCES OF SEVERE ILLNESS FROM COVID-19 ARE REDUCED. ACTIVITIES:THE ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED INCLUDE: REBUILDING COMMUNITY COMPOST BINS AT THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER SCHOOLS; HIRING A COMMUNITY COMPOST INTERN FOR EACH SCHOOL; ESTABLISHING A COMPOSTING PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY; PROVIDING A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS ON TOPICS SUCH AS FOOD PRODUCTION AND GARDENING, COOKING, COMPOSTING AT HOME, CLIMATE CHANGE RESILIENCY, CARBON SEQUESTRATION, AND FOOD EQUITY; UPGRADING THE GREENHOUSE; GROWING PLANT SEEDLINGS AND TREE SAPLINGS IN THE GREENHOUSE; DEVELOPING COMMUNITY OUTREACH MATERIALS; AND BUILDING COMMUNITY OUTREACH EVENTS. SUBRECIPIENT:THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER MIDDLE SCHOOL (ECMS) IS THE SUBAWARDEE. ECMS WILL CO-LEAD DEVELOPMENT WILL LEAD OR CO-LEAD ALL ELEMENTS OF THE PROJECT.OUTCOMES:DELIVERABLES FOR THIS PROJECT INCLUDE: REVITALIZATION OF COMMUNITY COMPOST BINS AT THE SCHOOLS; FOUR PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR PANELS INSTALLED WITH VENTILATION FANS IN AT THE SCHOOL IN INGLEWOOD; AND PLANTS DISTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS AND FAMILIES. OUTCOMES INCLUDE: INCREASE IN STUDENT KNOWLEDGE OF FOOD PRODUCTION, RENEWABLE ENERGY, CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECTS AND RESILIENCY, AIR POLLUTION ALONG TRANSPORTATION CORRIDORS, GARDENING, CARBON SEQUESTRATION, AND LOCAL REUSE AND AN INCREASE IN COMMUNITY AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH FOOD PRODUCTION AND FOOD WASTE TRANSPORTATION, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND AIR POLLUTION.
