About this award

The Federal Railroad Administration awarded $176.395 million to the North Carolina Railroad Company on October 1, 2025, under the Project Grant assistance type to address train interference delays and expand capacity along congested NCRR-owned corridor segments in North Carolina.

The award funds eight infrastructure components across the mainline (Charlotte to Greensboro), NC-line (Greensboro to Goldsboro), and EC-line (Goldsboro to Morehead City): siding extension, curve improvements, rail replacement, and a bridge repair or replacement study and clearance study. Deliverables include final NEPA documents, preliminary engineering (PE) design packages, final design (FD) design packages, and planning studies. The improvements will reduce train delays, minimize mainline track maintenance closures, and provide capacity to support a sixth passenger rail frequency while accommodating anticipated freight traffic growth. Beneficiaries include the North Carolina Railroad Company, Amtrak, Norfolk Southern, freight customers, and passengers.

Performance extends through January 31, 2031, with work performed in North Carolina. No sub-recipients are involved in this award.

Description

Address significant train interference delays that amtrak and norfolk southern (NS) experience along one of the most congested ncrr-owned corridor segments in north carolina, while also providing capacity to support a sixth passenger rail frequency and meet anticipated growth in freight rail traffic. The planned improvements will provide a more efficient rail network that delivers more reliable service through fewer train delays and mainline track maintenance closures, as well as more capacity to grow passenger and freight operations. Deliverables for this project include various final nepa documents, PE design packages, FD design packages, and planning studies. The beneficiaries of the project are ncrr, amtrak, NS, as well as freight customers and passengers. There is no proposed subrecipient.
