About this award

The Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration awarded the City of Madera $2 million on December 1, 2025, under the Railroad Crossing Elimination program (CFDA 20.327) to conduct planning activities at seven at-grade crossings along the Union Pacific Railroad corridor in Madera, California: Cleveland Avenue, Central Avenue, 3rd Street, 4th Street, Yosemite Avenue, 6th Street, and 9th Street.

The award funds a rail safety planning study with stakeholder engagement and alternatives analysis to identify grade-separation and grade-crossing solutions. The project prioritizes potential grade separation solutions at Yosemite and Cleveland Avenues. Deliverables include a project management plan and project planning package. By eliminating or improving at-grade crossings with high traffic volumes and frequent train activity, the project will enhance safety, improve traffic flow, accommodate multimodal transportation, and mitigate the physical barrier posed by the rail corridor through the community.

The period of performance extends from the award date through October 31, 2028, with all work performed in Madera, California. This is a Project Grant, with $2 million obligated.
