About this award
The Federal Highway Administration awarded Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) six million dollars on February 4, 2026, under the Safe Streets and Roads for All program (CFDA 20.939) to pilot car-free roadway demonstrations in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation leading up to and during the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games.
The demonstration project will temporarily open three high-collision corridors to people and restrict vehicle traffic: Figueroa Street from downtown Los Angeles to Expo Park, Hollywood Boulevard between Highland Avenue and Orange Drive, and Wilshire Boulevard along MacArthur Park. The project will use temporary materials to create pilot events that improve safety and active transportation connections on these roadways with significant collision histories. The demonstrations will account for proximity to 2028 Games venues and major tourist destinations, incorporating consideration of future security perimeters and logistical needs. The temporary closures will allow LADOT to evaluate potential benefits and impacts before considering permanent roadway closures.
The period of performance runs through February 4, 2031, with place of performance in Los Angeles, California.
Description
Through a partnership with LOS angeles department of transportation (ladot), this demonstration project will utilize temporary materials to create a series of pilot events that temporarily open roads to people and restrict vehicle traffic leading up to and during the 2028 olympic and paralympic summer games (2028 games). The project will pilot car-free demonstrations to improve safety and active transportation connections on roadways with a significant history of collisions: figueroa ST from downtown LOS angeles to expo park; hollywood blvd between highland AVE and orange DR; and wilshire blvd along macarthur park. Given the proximity of the projects to 2028 games venues and major tourist destinations, the demonstration projects will be designed and implemented with consideration of future security perimeters and logistical needs. These temporary demonstrations will allow ladot to evaluate the potential benefits and impacts of the pilot prior to considering more permanent roadway closures.
