About this award

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $150,250 to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205) on August 28, 2025, to construct a public restroom facility at Holly Beach along the Creole Nature Trail. This project addresses the loss of restroom infrastructure destroyed by recent hurricanes that has impeded visitor and local access to the recreational trail. The awardee will deliver a pre-cast concrete restroom facility featuring two unisex stalls, complete with associated site infrastructure including a 1,000-gallon-per-day septic tank, water and electrical connections, and an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant apron to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

The project is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2030, and represents a typical recreational trail infrastructure improvement eligible under the Highway Planning and Construction program's support for pedestrian and bicycle facilities, transportation alternatives, and recreational trail development. This award demonstrates FHWA's continued investment in multimodal transportation network improvements and public recreation access across the United States.

Description

Project description
Several recent hurricanes destroyed the restrooms along the creole nature trail, making IT difficult for both visitors and locals to enjoy the trail experience. Nsbp funds will be utilized to purchase and install a pre-cast concrete restroom facility with two unisex stalls as well as necessary site work, including a 1,000 gallon per day loading capacity septic tank, running of water and electricity to site, and installing an ADA apron across the front of the facility to provide access to those with disabilities.
