About this award

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $2.0 million on August 4, 2025, to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Public Works under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205) to execute Phase 2 of the Route 10 Hazard Elimination Project. The project involves safety upgrades and pavement rehabilitation of approximately 2.5 miles of rural arterial roadway on Rota, extending from Ta'alo Curve to the Rota International Airport entrance. Work scope includes removal of existing asphalt pavement, installation of new asphalt pavement overlay, and application of roadway striping and pavement markings.

This project aligns with the Highway Planning and Construction program's core mission of providing federal financial assistance for highway construction, preservation, and improvement activities. The FHWA's formula-based funding mechanism supports territorial transportation agencies in a manner analogous to state departments of transportation, enabling the Northern Mariana Islands to address critical transportation infrastructure and safety enhancements across its island territories under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act authorization.
