About this award
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $6.92 million to the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities under the Highway Planning and Construction program (CFDA 20.205) on July 31, 2025, to fund comprehensive emissions and exhaust upgrades for the M/V Kennicott, a vessel operated as part of Alaska's Marine Highway System (AMHS). The project involves hiring a shipyard contractor to execute construction and refurbishment services, including ship service diesel generator replacement, machinery control system upgrades, alarm and monitoring system upgrades, waste heat boiler replacements, and exhaust system upgrades designed to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency.
The scope of work encompasses planning, scheduling, technical documentation, stability assessments, dock and sea trials, regulatory compliance work, vessel preservation and coatings, repair of deteriorated steel, and comprehensive annual overhaul activities. The project also incorporates workforce development through a training program and compliance with the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program requirements. This investment supports Alaska's multimodal transportation infrastructure by enhancing the environmental performance and operational capability of a critical ferry vessel serving coastal communities across the state.
