Description

Purpose
The purpose of this grant is to improve the prediction of heat transfer from battery energy storage systems (bess) using the NIST fire dynamics simulator (FDS) as the underlying computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool, focusing on improving thermal radiation with from heterogeneous fuels and heat transfer grid convergence.
Activities
The following activities will be performed. First, simulating high resolution fire scenarios with heterogeneous fuels and evaluating different approaches to reconstruct these predictions at coarser resolutions will be carried out. Second, simulating high resolution fire scenarios with atmospheric absorption, developing a-posteriori LES filtered results, and comparing a-posteriori results with LES simulation predictions at the same resolution will be performed. Third, best practice guidance on bess heat transfer predictions will be documented. In addition, test cases utilized during development will be published online in an open-source format.
Expected outcomes
The expected outcome is an improved computational tool, and the approach used in this work can generally be extended and applicable to other computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models using similar frameworks.
Intended beneficiaries
Fire protection community would benefit from the modified computational tool that could be used to improve bess fire protection to enhance public safety.
Subrecipient activities
There is no subrecipient in this grant.
