Description
- Activities
- The US, through the american national standards institute (ansi), invited ISO/TC 164 (mechanical testing of metals) to meet in the US in september 2023. The US tag, which is administered by astm, a non-profit, non-governmental standards developer, has the responsibility to host the meeting. Astm is seeking a $15,000.00 grant to assist in defraying the costs of hosting the upcoming meeting of ISO/TC 164 and administering the US tag to ISO/TC 164.ISO develops international standards covering a wide range of subjects. Its membership is made up of 164 national standards bodies representing 164 countries (one member-one country-one vote). Ansi is the national standards body that represents the U.S. In ISO. ISO/TC 164 is one of the many committees that make up ISO. Ansi, through a memorandum of understanding with astm, has agreed to delegate the responsibility of administering the US tag to ISO/TC 164 to astm.astm is made up of more than 30,000 individual volunteer members who write standards covering a broad reach of topics that are used throughout the world. Its staff, headquartered in west conshohocken, PA, comprises about 200 persons who administer over 140 standards-developing committees. Astm?s primary revenue is the sale of its standards. Astm recognizes the importance of ?being at the table? When ISO standards are developed for U.S. Manufacturers. Astm standards for mechanical testing are most often used in the US for domestic trade, but manufacturers trading internationally are often required to use ISO standards and, in some cases, ISO standards are used domestically. As such, having a voice in the development of ISO standards is very important for US industry.
- Expected outcomes
- 80-100 delegates from 15-20 countries attend each ISO/TC 164 meeting. ISO/TC 164 consists of four subcommittees, each having several working groups as well as the main committee. ISO/TC 164 meetings are week-long events, with meetings held concurrently. The 2023 meeting is scheduled to be held september 25-29, 2023. Astm staff under the direction of ashley wiand will organize the meeting with the assistance of an unpaid volunteer, earl ruth (chair of the US tag), and assistance from other unpaid volunteer tag members as needed. Hosting an ISO/TC 164 meeting involves the provision of meeting rooms with refreshments at breaks, lunches, local transportation, a/v equipment, wifi availability, power cords, outlets, and clerical support. Astm organizes many such conferences per year and is well equipped to perform this task.a. Wiand and her assistant l. Drennen will be administering the US tag throughout the year, which includes maintaining membership rolls, disseminating information from ISO to the membership, balloting, fund management, and organizing meetings. The total cost (2023 ISO/TC 164 meeting and US tag administration) this year is anticipated to be $53,730.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Astm committees E28-mechanical testing and E08-fatigue and fracture jointly control the US tag. Volunteer E28/E08 members make up the membership of the US tag and have attended ISO meetings on behalf of the US for more than 40 years. Member nations have an obligation to host a meeting periodically. The larger nations host a meeting approximately once every ten years while smaller nations less often. The last meeting hosted by the US was in 2010 (NIST boulder, CO).
