Description
- Purpose
- The purpose of this grant is to evaluate promoter methods to enable efficient storage and transport of natural gas by forming solidified natural gas.
- Activities
- The researchers will examine and scale-up processes to efficiently produce solidified natural gas, e.g. natural gas hydrates at scale using thermodynamic hydrate promoters. The activities to be performed include: 1) comprehensive evaluation of chemical promoted hydrate formation; 2) design and test prototype system for the continuous capture and conversion of methane to hydrates; 3) design and demonstration of a larger scale system and 4) process modelling and the design of a full production scale system.
- Expected outcomes
- This project will identify the target operating conditions to form solidified natural gas, including the temperature, pressure, and necessary conditions of the promoter to produce methane/natural gas hydrate and obtain the associated hydrate growth rates and VOL.% conversion. Functional requirements will be incorporated into a test prototype continuous production system, followed by sub-pilot scale methane capture systems. Using information and engineering data gained from the prototype and sub-pilot scale systems along with process models, a full production scale system will be designed.
- Intended beneficiaries
- The fundamental and engineering data and designs for production scale systems generated from this research could be commercialized and used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions released during fossil fuel production.
- Subrecipient activities
- The recipients plan to subaward funds to conduct aspects of the design and demonstration of solid methane hydrate capture at sub-pilot scale.
