Description

Purpose
The purpose of this grant is to develop tools for the harmonization of forensic sequencing data. The tools will be integrated into a publicly available online source.
Activities
The researchers will develop software tools to evaluate, convert (if needed) and report sequence information from the forensic community. This activity will be carried out in accordance with existing nomenclature guidance from forensic stakeholders. The interface will interface with the existing "strider" database to test and validate their application.
Expected outcomes
The researchers are developing a guidance and software tool to evaluate forensic sequencing information. The outcome will be 1) a STR sequence conversion tool 2) integration of this tool into public QC sequence databases and 3) dissemination of this resource within the forensic genetics community.
Intended beneficiaries
The nomenclature tools and integrated strider website can be used by commercial entities that produce data related to the sequencing of forensic STR markers to display their information in consistent format. Hosts of forensic sequence databases can use these resources to convert sequence strings - this will ensure harmonization and interoperability in the forensic sequencing community.
Subrecipient activities
The recipient plans to subaward funds to conduct advanced coding aspects of database integration and expand capabilities for this research project.
