About this award

The Internal Revenue Service awarded Branches, Inc. $166,000 under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Matching Grant Program (CFDA 21.009) on October 1, 2025, for the period through September 30, 2026.

Branches will extend free tax return preparation services to underserved populations in Florida, including low-to-moderate income individuals, persons with disabilities, non-native English speakers, Native Americans, rural residents, military members and families, and elderly taxpayers. The organization must ensure at least 90 percent of returns prepared serve individuals whose earned income does not exceed Earned Income Tax Credit thresholds and must file all eligible returns electronically. Branches is authorized to engage sub-recipients to deliver key program elements while maintaining compliance with grant guidelines.

The VITA Matching Grant Program requires recipients to provide non-federal matching funds equal to the federal award amount. The program funds organizations that extend services to underserved populations in hardest-to-reach areas, increase capacity for electronic filing, heighten quality control, enhance volunteer training, and improve return accuracy. Recipients must follow existing VITA site operation guidance, achieve 100 percent of their return production goals, and demonstrate incremental increases in return preparation annually.
