BICKNELLS THRUSH IS A RARE AND DECLINING MIGRATORY BIRD FOUND IN NEW ENGLAND'S FORESTS, INCLUDING TWO NATIONAL FORESTS. WHILE IT MAY SEEM LIKE JUST ANOTHER BIRD, ITS PRESENCE IS A KEY INDICATOR OF THE HEALTH OF THESE FORESTS, WHICH PROVIDE CLEAN AIR, CLEAN WATER, AND SUPPORT LOCAL ECONOMIES. THESE FORESTS ALSO ATTRACT OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS, INCLUDING BIRDWATCHERS, HIKERS, AND TOURISTS, GENERATING REVENUE FOR BUSINESSES AND COMMUNITIES. THE BIRDS OVERWINTER ON THE ISLAND OF HISPANIOLA IN THE CARIBBEAN, AND PROTECTING THIS LIMITED HABITAT AREA IS ESSENTIAL TO ENSURE THE SPECIES DOES NOT DECLINE FURTHER. IN THIS PROJECT, PARTNERS ARE CONDUCTING STUDIES TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HABITAT AND RESOURCE NEEDS IN THE OVERWINTERING AREAS FOR THE SPECIES. THIS INFORMATION WILL BE USED TO INFORM AND IMPLEMENT THE MOST EFFECTIVE CONSERVATION ACTIONS TO PREVENT FURTHER SPECIES DECLINE.
