FOREST LEGACY PROGRAM (FLP) PROMOTES THE CONSERVATION AND PROTECTION IN PERPETUITY OF IMPORTANT FOREST AREAS OF HIGH ENVIRONMENTAL IMPORTANCE AND ARE THREATENED BY CONVERSION TO NON-FOREST USES. FLP PROVIDES THE STATE FORESTRY AGENCIES WITH THE TOOLS AND MECHANISM TO PROTECT IMPORTANT SCENIC, CULTURAL, FISH, WILDLIFE, AND RECREATIONAL RESOURCES, RIPARIAN AREAS, AND OTHER ECOLOGICAL VALUES. TRADITIONAL FOREST USES SUCH AS TIMBER, HUNTING, FISHING, HIKING, AND RECREATION ARE CONSISTENT WITH FLP. FLP PROVIDES STATE FORESTRY AGENCY WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL COMPETITION TO OBTAIN FUNDS TO PURCHASE LAND TO CONSERVE IN PERPETUITY. PURCHASE AND DONATED LAND AND INTERESTS IN LAND THROUGH CONSERVATION EASEMENTS AND FEE-SIMPLE ACQUISITION ARE USED TO ACQUIRE LAND FROM WILLING SELLERS AND DONORS.
