The Department of Agriculture Forest Service R9-Eastern Region awarded the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources $646,588 under the Cooperative Forestry Assistance program (CFDA 10.664) on August 18, 2026, for forest inventory, analysis, and stewardship activities across Wisconsin. The award funds four coordinated efforts to inventory and actively manage Wisconsin's forest lands. The recipient will intensify forest inventory and analysis by collecting data from an additional 540 plots statewide to generate more reliable estimates for smaller geographic areas and stratified components such as forest type, age class, and condition. The recipient will also conduct urban forest inventory and analysis at 125 plots across Wisconsin communities and neighborhoods, documenting urban forest condition in a statistically sound manner. The award supports modernization of the state's continuous forest inventory data collection and analysis system, including updated field collection protocols, data transfer and storage infrastructure, and a user interface for state land managers and foresters to access inventory information and inform management decisions.
