- This $345,183 National Science Foundation project grant supports Oregon State University in developing a model of engineering design activity engagement and identity motives among students and professionals. Funded under the NSF Engineering program (CFDA 47.041), the three-year award beginning September 2022 aims to investigate how and why civil and mechanical engineering students and practicing engineers engage with engineering design. Key objectives include developing an engagement model,...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) will fund research at Oregon State University (OSU) to investigate how undergraduate engineering students can translate their disciplinary knowledge into professional practice, a process known as "knowledge mobilization." The $349,998 award, effective June 15, 2024 through May 31, 2027, will utilize the Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) framework to characterize knowledge mobilization...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) federal grant award under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program provides $649,294 to Rutgers, The State University to explore and assess student perceptions, engagement, and learning outcomes from modifying three undergraduate mechanical and aerospace engineering courses using the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. The project aims to establish a foundation for STEM instructors to create more inclusive learning environments that resonate with...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Engineering Education and Centers awarded $131,812 to the University of Houston System (operating as University of Houston-Clear Lake) on July 15, 2026, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to redesign an early engineering class using community cultural wealth and collaborative project-based learning. The project addresses early retention and success in engineering education by strengthening how early engineering students at primarily...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) supports research examining the contextual influences on faculty pedagogical decision-making and student learning in sociotechnical engineering design education. The $244,294 award to Trustees of Tufts College (Tufts University) will fund a multi-year research study with three key objectives: Convene faculty across institutions to facilitate knowledge sharing and pedagogical innovation...
- This $352,536 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) will support Utah State University's (USU) "CAREER: INNOVATION FOR INCLUSION: TRANSFORMING ENGINEERING THROUGH SCALABLE ACCESSIBILITY" project. The objectives are to: 1) Explore and identify systemic access issues for engineering undergraduates with disabilities across university levels; 2) Quantify and characterize these systemic access barriers; 3) Develop an engineering...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Engineering Education and Centers awarded Northeastern University $200,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to investigate how recognition from K-12 students strengthens engineering identity formation in first-year undergraduate engineering students. The research will examine an established Northeastern service-learning program in which first-year undergraduates lead hands-on engineering, science, and building...
CONFERENCE: ADVANCING ENGINEERING EDUCATION THROUGH INTEGRATED MODELS -THIS PROJECT AIMS TO SERVE THE NATIONAL INTEREST BY ADVANCING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF INTEGRATED MODELS OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION. INTEGRATED ENGINEERING IS EMERGING ACROSS THE WORLD. ONE COMMONALITY AMONG PROGRAMS IS A DESIRE TO INNOVATE IN WAYS NOT SEEN AS POSSIBLE WITHIN TRADITIONAL ENGINEERING DISCIPLINES. WHAT EXACTLY IS INTEGRATED INTO STUDENTS? EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE VARIES, AND INCLUDES THINGS LIKE MULTIPLE DISCIPLINES, PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND MINDSETS, CONTEXTUALIZATION AND AUTHENTICITY, INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES, LIBERAL ARTS, STUDENT AUTONOMY, AND SPECIFIED VALUES. THE PEDAGOGICAL APPROACHES SEEN IN INTEGRATED ENGINEERING PROGRAMS OFFER PROMISE FOR TRULY TRANSFORMING ENGINEERING EDUCATION. THESE STUDENT-CENTERED APPROACHES ALIGN WITH CARING PEDAGOGIES AND PROVIDE SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR SUPPORTING DIVERSE STUDENT EXPERIENCES. INNOVATION IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION CAN BE CHALLENGING TO IMPLEMENT AND TO SUSTAIN. HENCE BUILDING COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR INNOVATION IS CRUCIAL TO SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS. THE GOAL OF THE PROPOSED WORK IS TO 1) PUBLISH A COLLECTION OF CASE STUDIES OF INTEGRATED ENGINEERING PROGRAMS THAT ADDRESS THEMES AND CHALLENGES NAMED DURING THE 2024 INTEGRATED ENGINEERING EDUCATION INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM AND 2) GATHER EDUCATORS FROM AROUND THE UNITED STATES TO IDENTIFY AND DESCRIBE ADDITIONAL SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATIONS OF INTEGRATED AND INTEGRATIVE MODELS IN US ENGINEERING EDUCATION PROGRAMS. THE WORKSHOP WILL RESULT IN UPDATED APPROACHES TO ADDRESS CHALLENGES FOR INNOVATION AS WELL AS FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREATING COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE TO SUPPORT INNOVATION IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION. THESE WILL BE BROADLY DISSEMINATED THROUGH A SUMMARIZING WHITE PAPER, EXPANDING KNOWLEDGE OF INTEGRATED ENGINEERING PROGRAMS AND BEST PRACTICES FOR INNOVATION. THE NSF IUSE: EDU PROGRAM SUPPORTS RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS TO IMPROVE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STEM EDUCATION FOR ALL STUDENTS. THROUGH THE ENGAGED STUDENT LEARNING TRACK, THE PROGRAM SUPPORTS THE CREATION, EXPLORATION, AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PROMISING PRACTICES AND TOOLS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
