CONFERENCE: MAPPING THE SCIENCE COMMUNICATION TRANSLATION LANDSCAPE -SCIENCE COMMUNICATION RESEARCH HAS EXPANDED RAPIDLY OVER THE PAST TWO DECADES, GENERATING NEW EVIDENCE ABOUT HOW TO COMMUNICATE SCIENCE, ENGAGE COMMUNITIES, AND SUPPORT EVIDENCE-INFORMED DECISION-MAKING. HOWEVER, THERE IS LIMITED UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THIS KNOWLEDGE MOVES INTO PRACTICE?OR HOW LESSONS LEARNED FROM PRACTICE INFORM FUTURE RESEARCH. THIS PROJECT WILL BRING TOGETHER STAKEHOLDERS FROM ACROSS THE SCIENCE COMMUNICATION ECOSYSTEM TO STRENGTHEN THE BIDIRECTIONAL TRANSLATION OF KNOWLEDGE ? THAT IS, THE INTERPRETATION, ADAPTATION, EXCHANGE, AND USE OF KNOWLEDGE?BETWEEN SCIENCE COMMUNICATION RESEARCH AND PRACTICE. THROUGH A SURVEY, VIRTUAL STAKEHOLDER DISCUSSIONS, AND AN IN-PERSON CONFERENCE, THE PROJECT WILL CHARACTERIZE EXISTING TRANSLATION EFFORTS, SHARED CHALLENGES, AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLABORATION, PRODUCING A ROADMAP TO HELP GUIDE FUTURE RESEARCH, PRACTICE, FUNDING, AND CAPACITY-BUILDING ACROSS THE FIELD. THE PROJECT WILL USE A THREE-PHASE, MIXED-METHODS APPROACH TO CHARACTERIZE THE SCIENCE COMMUNICATION TRANSLATION ECOSYSTEM AND DEVELOP A STAKEHOLDER-INFORMED ROADMAP FOR STRENGTHENING THE BIDIRECTIONAL TRANSLATION OF KNOWLEDGE BETWEEN RESEARCH AND PRACTICE. PHASE 1 WILL CONSIST OF A PRE-CONFERENCE LANDSCAPE MAPPING EFFORT THAT COMBINES VIRTUAL LEARNING SESSIONS AND A STAKEHOLDER SURVEY TO IDENTIFY EXISTING TRANSLATION INITIATIVES, ORGANIZATIONS, PARTNERSHIPS, AND KEY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES ACROSS THE FIELD. PHASE 2 WILL BRING TOGETHER RESEARCHERS, PRACTITIONERS, EDUCATORS, FUNDERS, JOURNAL EDITORS, AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS AT IN AN IN-PERSON CONFERENCE TO EXAMINE THE EMERGING LANDSCAPE, SHARE EXPERIENCES, AND COLLABORATIVELY IDENTIFY PRIORITIES FOR STRENGTHENING TRANSLATION. PHASE 3 WILL SYNTHESIZE INSIGHTS FROM THE SURVEY, VIRTUAL SESSIONS, AND CONFERENCE DISCUSSIONS INTO A PUBLICLY AVAILABLE, ACTION-ORIENTED ROADMAP OUTLINING STAKEHOLDER-INFORMED PRIORITIES AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH, PRACTICE, FUNDING, AND INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT ACROSS THE SCIENCE COMMUNICATION ECOSYSTEM. THIS PROJECT WAS FUNDED BY THE STEM K-12 PROGRAM, WHICH SUPPORTS FUNDAMENTAL, APPLIED, AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH ON STEM LEARNING IN BOTH FORMAL K-12 EDUCATION AND INFORMAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
