The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded The Ohio State University $749,855 on January 1, 2027, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076).
The project investigates how exposure to educational videos on Netflix and YouTube contributes to the development of STEM interests among children ages two to five. Using a measurement-burst design, the research addresses whether viewing STEM videos predicts changes in children's STEM interests over time, whether children's existing interests shape subsequent selection of STEM videos, and whether supportive parental practices around media use strengthen these relationships. The project follows families with young children over one year and examines how everyday media experiences and parental behaviors support early engagement with STEM. Findings will inform families, educators, and media producers seeking to expand access to high-quality STEM learning opportunities and strengthen pathways into the STEM workforce. The project also supports research training for undergraduate students and disseminates findings through community and stakeholder partnerships.
Performance occurs at Columbus, Ohio, with a completion date of December 31, 2029. The assistance type is a Project Grant.
