- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (formerly Education and Human Resources) program (CFDA 47.076) provides $156,000 to Northwestern University to rapidly develop and research a set of "unplugged" hands-on learning activities for teaching middle-school students about artificial intelligence (AI). The project aims to create an open-source repository of up to 15 hands-on, low-cost AI literacy activities that can be led by educators...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation (NSF), Office of Multidisciplinary Activities, awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan a $237,500 Project Grant (CFDA 47.075: Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences) effective September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2029, to develop and evaluate an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered learning support system that enhances student self-regulated learning through human-AI co-regulation. The research deliverables...
NSF FF: PLANNING: CRITIQUING AND LEARNING TO EVALUATE AI FINANCIAL REASONING -THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD AIDS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BECOMING ADEPT USERS OF AI WHEN ASKING FINANCIAL QUESTIONS. MANY TEENS RELY ON AI FOR MONEY ADVICE, BUT THESE TOOLS CAN GIVE WRONG OR MISLEADING ANSWERS. THIS PROJECT WILL CREATE LEARNING ACTIVITIES WHERE STUDENTS REVIEW AI?GENERATED FINANCIAL ADVICE, SPOT MISTAKES, AND USE ALGEBRA AND REASONING TO CORRECT THEM. STUDENTS WILL EXPLORE REALISTIC SCENARIOS IN WHICH THE AI MAKES INTENTIONAL ERRORS, GIVING THEM SAFE PRACTICE IN ANALYZING CLAIMS. THE TOOL WILL GUIDE STUDENTS AS THEY QUESTION IDEAS, CHECK FACTS, AND REVISE THEIR THINKING. EDUCATORS AND FAMILIES WILL HELP DESIGN THE ACTIVITIES SO THEY FIT REAL CLASSROOM NEEDS AND SUPPORT STRONGER FINANCIAL LITERACY. BY TEACHING STUDENTS TO CHALLENGE AI AND THINK FOR THEMSELVES, THE PROJECT AIMS TO BUILD CONFIDENCE, IMPROVE DECISION?MAKING SKILLS, AND PREPARE STUDENTS FOR RESPONSIBLE MONEY MANAGEMENT IN EVERYDAY LIFE. THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD CO-DESIGNS AN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE WHICH PRESENTS FLAWED AI?GENERATED FINANCIAL SCENARIOS, PROVIDES STRUCTURED SCAFFOLDS FOR CRITIQUE, AND OFFERS DASHBOARDS THAT SURFACE CLASS?LEVEL ERROR PATTERNS FOR TEACHERS. PLANNING ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE DEVELOPING AN AI?ERROR TAXONOMY, A CRITIQUE?SEVERITY RUBRIC, ADVERSARIAL SCENARIO TEMPLATES, AND PAIRED STUDENT? AND TEACHER?FACING DASHBOARDS CAPABLE OF VISUALIZING PATTERNS IN FINANCIAL REASONING. THE TEAM WILL ALSO CREATE A CONFIDENCE?MEASUREMENT PROTOCOL THAT CAPTURES STUDENTS? CERTAINTY LEVELS AS THEY EVALUATE AI?GENERATED CONTENT. THE PROJECT WILL GENERATE EARLY PILOT DATA TO ASSESS FEASIBILITY, IDENTIFY DESIGN RISKS, AND ESTABLISH GO/NO?GO CRITERIA FOR A DEVELOPMENT?PHASE EVALUATION ALIGNED WITH STATE FINANCIAL?LITERACY STANDARDS. BY INTEGRATING ADVERSARIAL EXAMPLES, REFLECTIVE SCAFFOLDS, AND EDUCATOR?READY ANALYTICS, THE WORK SEEKS TO STRENGTHEN STUDENTS? FINANCIAL?REASONING SKILLS WHILE ENABLING TEACHERS TO MONITOR MISCONCEPTIONS AT SCALE. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
