The $208,240 project, led by Carnegie Mellon University and Pennsylvania State University, will develop learning materials and...
- This $199,503 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program will fund a large-scale, mixed-methods study to understand perceptions and use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in K-12 education. The one-year project will survey a nationally representative sample of parents, teachers, and youth to identify opportunities, risks, and supports needed for integrating AI-driven learning tools. The study will employ both...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $199,994 Project Grant through the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program to The Leland Stanford Junior University to explore how high school youth, particularly those from historically marginalized communities, interact with and learn about generative AI and machine learning tools. Over a one-year period, the researchers will pilot classroom and extracurricular activities, collect quantitative and qualitative data, and analyze findings to develop...
- This $349,999 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) will support a research project at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) to investigate how to design and integrate artificial intelligence (AI) to support equitable K-12 science education. The project plans to explore the use of multimodal AI to provide automated feedback for formative science assessments, with the goal of generating design principles to develop...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) grant award provides $399,979 to San Francisco State University to develop a prototype of an AI-driven platform for guiding neurodiverse teamwork in engineering courses. The project aims to advance the understanding of how to provide guidance for neurodiverse teams of learners, cultivating inclusion and engagement of neurodivergent students in engineering. The research will investigate the challenges experienced by...
- The National Science Foundation awarded North Carolina State University a $1,166,886 Project Grant under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop the AI Play program model and associated curricular materials. The grant aims to introduce 500 middle school students and more than 20 teachers in rural North Carolina communities to artificial intelligence concepts through game design activities and professional development from May 2022 to April 2025. As part of the grant, Wested will...
- This $177,306 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) will support "RESPONSIBLE, ETHICAL, AND EFFECTIVE ACCEPTABLE USE POLICIES FOR THE INTEGRATION OF GENERATIVE AI IN US SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND BEYOND". The project will convene a Generative AI (GenAI) Working Group comprised of diverse school and district leaders to: Write, adapt, and share sample GenAI Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) for a range of district contexts. Work with their...
- This $300,000 Project Grant award, provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) program (CFDA 47.084), supports the development of an AI-powered toolkit to make digital activities, such as puzzles and competitive sports, more accessible for older adults aged 50 and above. The project, led by Northeastern University, aims to address the barriers that prevent many older adults from engaging with digital activities, whether due to...
NSF FF: PLANNING: ETHICAL AI GAME CREATION TOOLBOX FOR ADHD YOUTH -THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD SUPPORTS THE CO-CREATION OF AN AI-ENHANCED TOOLBOX FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF DIGITAL GAMES FOR TEACHERS AND THEIR STUDENTS WITH ADHD AND OTHER LEARNING DIFFERENCES. MANY STUDENTS WHO THINK AND LEARN IN DIFFERENT WAYS HAVE FEWER CHANCES TO CREATE GAMES OR USE DESIGN TOOLS. THIS PROJECT WILL STRENGTHEN PARTICIPATION IN STEM BY GIVING MORE STUDENTS ACCESS TO GAME DESIGN TOOLS THAT ARE ACCESSIBLE, ETHICAL, AND SUPPORTIVE OF STUDENT WELL?BEING. FAMILIES, EDUCATORS, AND STUDENTS WILL CO?DESIGN THE PROTOTYPE TO MAKE SURE THE EXPERIENCE ENCOURAGES CREATIVITY, REFLECTION, AND CONFIDENCE. THE TOOLS WILL HELP STUDENTS EXPRESS IDEAS, TRY NEW DESIGNS, AND SEE THEMSELVES AS CREATORS. BY MAKING CREATIVE TECHNOLOGY MORE INCLUSIVE, THE PROJECT HOPES TO OPEN NEW DOORS FOR YOUTH AND HELP THEM BUILD STEM AND AI SKILLS THAT SUPPORT LONG?TERM SUCCESS. THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD AIMS TO DECREASE BARRIERS FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFERENCES TO PARTICIPATE IN STEM ACTIVITIES. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM WILL DESIGN AN AI?ENABLED GAME?CREATION TOOLBOX THAT INCORPORATES ETHICAL AI FRAMEWORKS AND INCLUSIVE TECHNOLOGY PRACTICES. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP PROTOTYPE WORKFLOWS THAT EMBED REFLECTIVE AI SUPPORTS AND OPERATIONALIZE MODELS SUCH THAT PRIORITIZES FLEXIBLE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AND CHILDREN'S WELL BEING. TECHNICAL EFFORTS WILL FOCUS ON ALIGNING GAME?CREATION TOOLS WITH RESPONSIBLE AI PRINCIPLES, IDENTIFYING ACCESSIBILITY CONSIDERATIONS, AND INTEGRATING SCAFFOLDS THAT PROMOTE STUDENT AGENCY AND ETHICAL ENGAGEMENT. USABILITY TESTING WITH TEACHERS AND FAMILIES WILL GENERATE QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DATA ON TOOL PERFORMANCE AND INSTRUCTIONAL FIT. OUTPUTS WILL INCLUDE PROTOTYPE COMPONENTS, DESIGN?EVALUATION INSIGHTS, ETHICAL REASONING, AND LEARNER AUTONOMY. THE WORK SUPPORTS RESEARCH AI LITERACY, CREATIVITY, AND YOUTH WELL?BEING. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
