- This $400,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) aims to redesign an introductory computer science (CS1) course to teach programming with the aid of large language model (LLM) AI assistants. The key goals are to: 1) Redesign the CS1 course to emphasize skills like code reading, testing, and problem decomposition rather than just syntax and writing code from scratch; 2) Study how...
- This $149,971 project grant, awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), will support the development and evaluation of a Comprehensive Personalized Programming Practice Environment (C-3PE) that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance computer science education. The primary awardee, the University of Massachusetts (UMass), will collaborate with Carnegie-Mellon University, University of Massachusetts, and North Carolina State...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Federal Grant (CFDA 47.070) award of $175,331 will support the development and evaluation of novel AI-based methods for student modeling to trace students' competencies in computer science education. The project aims to tailor large language models (LLMs) to account for students' knowledge state, learning practices, and interactions with intelligent learning systems in order to generate more...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $199,999 RAPID grant under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to develop and evaluate a generative AI-powered robot design assistant for educational robotics. The project aims to investigate the potential of a task-oriented generative AI tool to support lower-performing learners and advance educational equity in robotics. The key planned activities include the development and testing of a prototype...
- This $249,960 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) will support the development and evaluation of a Comprehensive Personalized Programming Practice Environment (C-3PE) that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance computer science education. The project, led by North Carolina State University in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Massachusetts, aims to provide...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) provides $300,000 to Rutgers, The State University to lay the groundwork for new paradigms of responsible design, development, and deployment of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered writing tools. The key products and services to be delivered include: Clear and accessible articulations of the research methods and challenges for design-oriented AI as it applies to writing...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (formerly Education and Human Resources) program (CFDA 47.076) provides $156,000 to Northwestern University to rapidly develop and research a set of "unplugged" hands-on learning activities for teaching middle-school students about artificial intelligence (AI). The project aims to create an open-source repository of up to 15 hands-on, low-cost AI literacy activities that can be led by educators...
- EAGER: Supporting and Sustaining Evidence-Based Computer Science Education Oregon State University received $200k in funding from the National Science Foundation's Division of Information and Intelligent Systems (Computer and Information Science and Engineering program, CFDA 47.070) awarded April 15, 2026, with completion targeted for March 31, 2028. The project expands Computer Science for Oregon, an established statewide partnership, to support teachers and school leaders in integrating...
NSF FF: PLANNING: REIMAGINING CREATIVE COMPUTING WITH PEDAGOGICAL AI CODE ASSISTANCE -THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD HELPS STUDENTS BECOME MORE CONFIDENT AND THOUGHTFUL COMPUTER PROGRAMMERS. MANY STUDENTS USE AI TOOLS TO WRITE CODE, BUT THEY OFTEN ACCEPT THE RESULTS WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING HOW THE CODE WORKS OR HOW TO IMPROVE IT. THIS PROJECT WILL DESIGN A CREATIVE CODING TOOL WHERE AI ACTS AS A PARTNER, NOT A REPLACEMENT. THE TOOL WILL ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO READ, TEST, AND CHANGE AI?GENERATED CODE SO THEY BUILD REAL SKILLS. HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS, STUDENTS, AND FAMILIES WILL HELP DESIGN THE TOOL TO MAKE SURE IT SUPPORTS CREATIVITY, RESPONSIBILITY, AND CLEAR LEARNING GOALS. THE PLATFORM WILL HELP STUDENTS TRY NEW IDEAS, UNDERSTAND MISTAKES, AND GROW STRONGER CODING HABITS. BY GIVING STUDENTS A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE PLACE TO EXPLORE CODING WITH AI, THE PROJECT HOPES TO PREPARE THEM FOR FUTURE CLASSES, JOBS, AND OPPORTUNITIES IN COMPUTER SCIENCE. THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD COLLABORATIVELY DESIGNS APPROACHES FOR INTEGRATING PEDAGOGICAL CODE ASSISTANCE (PCA) FEATURES INTO A CREATIVE CODING ENVIRONMENT TO SUPPORT HIGH?SCHOOL?LEVEL PROGRAMMING. TECHNICAL DESIGN ELEMENTS INCORPORATE MODEL?GROUNDED FEEDBACK, SCAFFOLDS FOR CODE INTERPRETATION, AND STRUCTURES THAT POSITION AI AS A COLLABORATIVE PARTNER RATHER THAN AN AUTOMATED ANSWER PROVIDER GUIDED BY FOCUS GROUPS WITH TEACHERS, STUDENTS, AND PARENTS; DEVELOPMENT OF EARLY PROTOTYPES; AND PRELIMINARY TESTING ACROSS TWO HIGH SCHOOL SETTINGS. THE PROJECT DOCUMENTS HOW LEARNERS INTERACT WITH AI?GENERATED SUGGESTIONS AND HOW PCA FEATURES CAN ENHANCE CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING WITHOUT DIMINISHING PROBLEM?SOLVING AGENCY. THE PROJECT RESULTS IN RESPONSIBLE?USE GUIDELINES FOR PCA IMPLEMENTATION, WIREFRAMES FOR A FULL DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL, AND EVIDENCE?BASED INSIGHTS INTO LEARNER?AI INTERACTION PATTERNS. THE RESULTING CO-CREATED FRAMEWORK DEMONSTRATES A RESPONSIBLE, INSTRUCTIONALLY ALIGNED AI?SUPPORTED CODING ENVIRONMENTS THAT STRENGTHENS COMPUTATIONAL REASONING AND ENHANCES K12 LEARNING. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
