- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $199,994 Project Grant through the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program to The Leland Stanford Junior University to explore how high school youth, particularly those from historically marginalized communities, interact with and learn about generative AI and machine learning tools. Over a one-year period, the researchers will pilot classroom and extracurricular activities, collect quantitative and qualitative data, and analyze findings to develop...
- This Project Grant award of $200,000 from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education (47.076) program aims to promote AI readiness and democratize AI technologies for a broad spectrum of advanced cyberinfrastructure users and researchers. The key products and services provided under this 4-year award, which began on September 1, 2023, include: Developing a comprehensive suite of experiential learning modules, including flexible micro-modules and immersive extended reality experiences, to...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering (CFDA 47.041) award provides $400,000 over 3 years to Northeastern University to develop and implement a professional development program for high school STEM teachers focused on incorporating generative AI into their classroom instruction. The program will recruit 10 teachers per year, prioritizing those serving underrepresented students, and provide intensive summer training supplemented by monthly collaborative meetings and ongoing content...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) program provides $200,000 to support a time-sensitive project that aims to empower teachers to harness the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) to create interactive, personalized STEM learning resources. The project team, led by the Regents of the University of Michigan, will partner with WGBH Educational Foundation to develop a teacher-AI...
- This $199,503 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program will fund a large-scale, mixed-methods study to understand perceptions and use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in K-12 education. The one-year project will survey a nationally representative sample of parents, teachers, and youth to identify opportunities, risks, and supports needed for integrating AI-driven learning tools. The study will employ both...
- This $349,999 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) will support a research project at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) to investigate how to design and integrate artificial intelligence (AI) to support equitable K-12 science education. The project plans to explore the use of multimodal AI to provide automated feedback for formative science assessments, with the goal of generating design principles to develop...
- This $199,999 Project Grant was awarded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program. The grant supports the development and evaluation of an age-appropriate, career-driven AI educational program in smart manufacturing for 50 high-school students from underserved Alabama school districts. Key program components include: Creation of AI learning modules focused on the fused filament fabrication (FFF) additive manufacturing process, incorporating real-time...
NSF FF: PLANNING: FOSTERING AI LITERACY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND TEACHERS WITH AI-POWERED ROBOTS -THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD SUPPORTS THE CREATION OF AN AFFORDABLE AI-POWERED ROBOT THAT ALLOWS STUDENTS TO CREATE NEW BEHAVIORS THROUGH VERBAL PROMPTING RATHER THAN HAVING TO WRITE CODE. ROBOTS ARE INCREASINGLY COMMON IN EVERYDAY LIFE. K-12 ROBOTICS INSTRUCTION IS LARGELY LIMITED TO LOW-LEVEL PROGRAMMING AND TELEOPERATION RATHER THAN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TECHNOLOGIES. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM WILL PILOT EXPERIMENTS WITH HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS, STUDENTS, AND PARENTS TO TEST THE HARDWARE, THE AI CONCEPTS, AND THE FIT FOR A REAL CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT. BY LOWERING COSTS AND SIMPLIFYING LEARNING, THE PROJECT LOWERS THE BARRIERS TO PARTICIPATION IN AI?POWERED ROBOTICS EDUCATION. THIS FINDERS FOUNDRY AWARD ADVANCES KNOWLEDGE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION IN HIGH SCHOOL BY EXPLORING HOW LOW COST ROBOTIC PLATFORMS CAN TEACH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CONCEPTS TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. BY SHIFTING THE FOCUS FROM WRITING COMPUTER CODE TO CREATING INTELLIGENT BEHAVIORS THROUGH VERBAL PROMPTS, THE RESEARCH INVESTIGATES NEW METHODS FOR LOWERING THE BARRIER TO AI LITERACY. THE ROBOT USES OPEN SOURCE PROGRAMMING FRAMEWORK AND A LARGE LANGUAGE MODEL TO GIVE THE ROBOT A BROAD RANGE OF CAPABILITIES, INCLUDING LANGUAGE UNDERSTANDING AND IMAGE ANALYSIS. IT ALSO INCORPORATES SPEECH RECOGNITION AND GENERATION SERVICES, AND COMPUTER VISION CAPABILITIES. THE TOOLS OFFERS FOUR GRAPHICAL DISPLAYS THAT HELP MAKE THE ROBOT?S OPERATION TRANSPARENT TO STUDENTS, E.G., SHOWING HOW THE VISION SYSTEM PERCEIVES THE WORLD, THE CONTENTS OF THE ROBOT?S WORLD MAP, AND THE OUTPUTS OF ITS PARTICLE FILTER AND PATH PLANNER. THE INTERDISCIPLINARY TEAM WILL CO-DESIGN CURRICULUM RESOURCES AND MEASURE STUDENT LEARNING BASED ON THEIR ABILITY TO CONNECT ROBOT FUNCTIONS TO CORE AI CONCEPTS TO PROMOTE SCALABLE, LOW?COST AI?LITERACY EXPANSION. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
