Description
- Abstract
- The duluth summer undergraduate research workshop in combinatorics (june-july 2026 at the university of minnesota - duluth) provides students who have extraordinary potential to significantly advance mathematical research the opportunity to fully develop their research skills at an early stage of their career. The program?S goals are to keep these undergraduates in the pipeline to a PHD degree, maximize their ability to perform high-level professional research, and to integrate them into the broader research community. The PI and program CO-director are assisted by two program alumni who are advanced PHD candidates in combinatorics at top PHD programs and by a number of program alumni who visit for one to three weeks. The most significant impact the duluth program in 2026 will have is the training of future generations of mathematicians who will foster undergraduate and graduate research when they become professionals. The program will place special emphasis on training participants to use AI appropriately and effectively in mathematical research. In particular, participants will learn how to combine AI with lean to produce formally-verified proofs. Another goal of the program is to contribute to the advancement of combinatorics by resolving conjectures and answering questions in the literature of interest to well-established people in the field. New methods and concepts and novel applications and examples will be introduced. Some papers will provide deeper insights and better ways to think about concepts. All papers produced through the program will include new conjectures, questions, and problems, thereby stimulating further research in the area. The graduate assistants are engaged in all aspects of the program: finding suitable problems, acting as mentors and role models, interacting mathematically and socially with participants and visitors, holding practice sessions for presentations, arranging social activities, reading manuscripts, providing advice about graduate schools and fellowships, and writing evaluations of the participants? Research that the PIS use for writing letters of recommendation for graduate schools.
