- The National Science Foundation Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation awarded $607,204 to The Regents of the University of Colorado, doing business as University of Colorado-Denver, on October 1, 2026, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to develop incremental sheet forming methods for continuous fiber reinforced polymer composites using artificial intelligence-assisted process modeling. The research addresses a manufacturing constraint: continuous fiber...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Division of Materials Research awarded a $204,775 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, effective October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2029. This collaborative research initiative focuses on developing a transformative framework for metastability engineering in refractory multi-principal element alloys (RMPEAs)—a relatively new class of metallic...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) supports fundamental research by Arizona State University (ASU) to enable additive manufacturing of high-quality fiber-reinforced polymer composites through in-situ thermal polymerization of the matrix resin. The total award amount is $647,188 with a project period from November 1, 2024 to April 30, 2028. The research aims to develop a new composite manufacturing platform that uses a remote stimulus...
- This Project Grant award of $274,919 from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program supports the development of a new class of high-performance composite materials made from aluminum and carbon fiber. The key focus is on improving the interface between the metal and carbon fiber phases to create a low-defect, high-strength material with enhanced mechanical properties. The research aims to elucidate the microstructural evolution and...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation awarded Arizona State University $350,000 on August 1, 2026, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to investigate annealing-induced microstructural evolution in additively manufactured metal matrix composites and its effects on material properties and performance. The research addresses a knowledge gap in heat-treatment effects on additively manufactured metal matrix composites by conducting...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $544,364 on October 1, 2025, under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) to fund fundamental computational and experimental research on curing-induced microcracking in thermoset composites. Thermoset composites—advanced polymers reinforced with high-strength fibers—undergo chemical curing reactions that generate heat and stress, often...
PARTICIPANT SUPPORT FOR THE 2026 AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR COMPOSITES 41ST ANNUAL TECHNICAL CONFERENCE; MADISON, WISCONSIN; 28-30 SEPTEMBER 2026 -THIS GRANT PROVIDES TRAVEL SUPPORT FOR PARTICIPATING STUDENTS TO THE 2026 AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR COMPOSITES (ASC) ANNUAL TECHNICAL CONFERENCE; MADISON, WISCONSIN; 28?30 SEPTEMBER 2026. THE ASC CONFERENCE IS AN ANNUAL EVENT GATHERING RESEARCHERS IN COMPOSITES SINCE 1986. THE FUNDS WILL BE USED TO PROVIDE TRAVEL AWARDS FOR STUDENTS IN STEM TO ATTEND ASC 2026. THE FUNDS WILL ALSO BE USED TO DEVELOP COMMUNITY BUILDING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES THAT INCLUDE WORKSHOPS, MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES, PANEL DISCUSSIONS, AND POSTER PRESENTATION SESSIONS FOR THESE STUDENTS. THIS GRANT WILL PROVIDE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS IN STEM FROM US INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION TO I) ENGAGE WITH RESEARCHERS FROM ACADEMIA, INDUSTRY, AND GOVERNMENTAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS RELATED TO ADVANCED COMPOSITE MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES, II) CREATE A NETWORK OF YOUNG RESEARCHERS THAT CAN ESTABLISH FUTURE PARTNERSHIPS AND LEADERSHIP NATIONWIDE, AND III) ADVANCE SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE MECHANICS AND MANUFACTURING OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS THROUGH THE INCORPORATION OF NEW RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES. THE GRANT WILL PROVIDE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS IN STEM TO ATTEND THE 41ST ASC ANNUAL TECHNICAL CONFERENCE, THE PREMIER VENUE FOR THE DISSEMINATION OF FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY ADVANCEMENTS IN THE COMPOSITES FIELD IN THE UNITED STATES. THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THIS EVENT WILL BROADEN THE INVOLVEMENT OF EMERGING RESEARCHERS IN COMPOSITE MATERIALS, FOSTER INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO ADDRESSING FUTURE TECHNICAL CHALLENGES, AND PROMOTE RETENTION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN ENGINEERING AND ADVANCED MANUFACTURING FIELDS.
