The primary research focus is characterizing rare earth elements in iron oxide-apatite and carbonatite ore waste materials, as well as platinum group elements in weathered ore zones, using...
- Washington State University received a $284,698 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences on June 1, 2022 to support research titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: HOW DO ULTRAHIGH PRESSURE METAMORPHIC SHEETS FORM AND EXHUME? A CASE STUDY FROM THE TSO MORARI COMPLEX, INDIA." The award will fund research through May 31, 2025 under the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which aims to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system through...
- The National Science Foundation awarded Rareterra, Inc. $303,808 on September 1, 2026, under the SBIR Phase I program (CFDA 47.084, NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships) to develop a microbiological approach for recovering rare earth elements from industrial by-products. The recipient will engineer a microbial platform using bacteria to selectively extract and bioaccumulate rare earth elements from magnet manufacturing scrap and shredded electronics at ambient temperature and neutral pH,...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant award under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will support collaborative research to investigate the provenance of rare earth element-bearing monazite minerals in the Southeastern U.S. Atlantic Coastal Plain. The $147,775 award, made to Syracuse University, aims to explore potential bedrock and sedimentary sources of monazite and develop improved methods for locating these critical mineral deposits. The research will employ mass...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded Boise State University $342,714 on July 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to develop thermodynamically valid rare-earth element (REE) thermobarometers for determining mineral temperatures and pressures in geologic samples. The project will produce new theoretical calculations grounded in experimental data and activity models for REE thermobarometry, with primary application to garnet and clinopyroxene in...
- The National Science Foundation awarded Washington State University a $173,436 project grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research quantifying the role of simultaneous large low shear velocity provinces and continents on Earth's cooling history. Over a three-year period from July 2023 to June 2026, the university will use numerical simulations of mantle convection to study how Earth's thermal evolution and internal mantle dynamics are jointly altered by...
- This $451,225 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Kentucky Research Foundation will support collaborative research to explore new sources of rare earth elements (REEs) in the Southeastern U.S. The project aims to investigate the provenance and delivery of the REE-bearing mineral monazite from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Researchers will utilize advanced analytical techniques such as mass...
- The National Science Foundation awarded Washington State University a $300,153 project grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) for the period of August 1, 2021 through July 31, 2024. The grant will support the collaborative research project "CORRELATED VELOCITY MODELS AS DYNAMIC UPSCALING AND MODEL TRANSLATION TOOLS FOR WATERSHED-SCALE HYDROBIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLING" to be conducted in Pullman, Washington. The Geosciences program seeks to strengthen understanding of Earth's...
The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded Washington State University $361,308 on October 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to quantify the role and composition of mineralizing fluids in carbonatite-hosted rare earth element deposits. The award funds collaborative research examining regional fluid alteration patterns linked to mineralization at the Mountain Pass carbonatite-hosted rare earth element deposit in California to improve models of ore formation and develop more reliable exploration indicators. Researchers will conduct field mapping and petrological studies across the intrusive suite and alteration halo to provide geologic context for the temporal and spatial evolution of fluids, then integrate mineral assemblages and geochemistry with modeling to reconstruct fluid compositions. The integrated workflow is designed to serve as a blueprint for exploration of high-grade carbonatite rare earth element mineralization, which currently has minimal surface expression and makes exploration expensive and time-consuming. Performance occurs at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, with a period of performance through September 30, 2029.
