About this award
The National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education awarded Navajo Technical University $344,326 on October 1, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop an artificial intelligence concentration within the university's undergraduate computer science program.
The project will create new or adapt existing courses in machine learning, computer vision, and ethics in artificial intelligence, using project-based learning methods to build student proficiency in applying AI tools to real-world challenges. A required capstone project will have students research and deploy AI to solve an authentic problem. The concentration aims to strengthen NTU's computer science program and prepare students for workforce entry or advanced degree pursuit in AI-related fields.
Performance occurs at Navajo Technical University's Crownpoint, New Mexico campus through September 30, 2029.
Description
- Abstract
- The NSF tribal colleges and universities program (tcup) provides support to tcus to build capacity in stem education and research offerings at their institutions. This curriculum development project will create an artificial intelligence (AI) concentration within the existing undergraduate computer science program at navajo technical university. AI is increasingly found in all aspects of life. Thus all members of society, but particularly computer scientists, will benefit from improved AI literacy. Courses will be created or adapted to focus on foundational understanding of AI and how to use IT in working to resolve contemporary real-world issues. The new concentration will augment NTU?s capacity to offer robust computer science degrees that include cutting-edge AI content knowledge and skill building. Further, IT will prepare NTU students for entering the workforce or pursuing advanced education in AI-related fields, thus contributing to local economic stability and national security. This project aims to design and deliver an AI concentration as part of the current undergraduate computer science program offered at navajo technical university. The concentration will include courses such as machine learning, computer vision, and ethics in AI. Using project-based learning methods, the courses will promote students? Knowledge of theoretical AI-related concepts while developing their proficiency in applying AI tools to real-world challenges. A capstone project that requires students to research and use AI to resolve an authentic problem will be required to graduate. The concentration in AI will strengthen NTU?s computer science program and support students? Preparation for completing a terminal degree or entering the workforce in fields that utilize AI tools. This award reflects NSF's statutory mission and has been deemed worthy of support through evaluation using the foundation's intellectual merit and broader impacts review criteria.- subawards are not planned for this award.
