The National Science Foundation Division of Computing and Communication Foundations awarded DePaul University $700,000 on October 1, 2026, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program to form a networked improvement community studying course alignment and student success at critical transition points in computing education pathways. The project addresses gaps in computing degree completion by examining two junctures where students frequently struggle: the transition from high school early college credit (Advanced Placement, dual credit, or dual enrollment) to college-level computing courses, and the transfer from community colleges to four-year universities. Using a mixed-methods design that links longitudinal administrative records with qualitative student interviews, the work will identify misalignments in course content, teaching style, and programming languages that cause students to fall behind despite strong prior performance, and will test practical interventions to smooth these pathways. The project brings together Chicago Public Schools, City Colleges of Chicago, DePaul University, Loyola University Chicago, and University of Illinois Chicago to investigate where students lose ground and develop solutions. Work is performed in Chicago, Illinois, with a period of performance from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2029. The assistance type is a Project Grant.
