Project Grant 2611202
- The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded the University of Arizona $328,683 on August 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to reconstruct 3,000 years of hydroclimatic variability in the western United States using giant sequoia tree-ring chronologies. The project will update and expand a network of giant sequoia tree-ring chronologies across the Southern Sierra Nevada that has not been comprehensively updated since 1995. Researchers will combine...
- This $425,988 federal Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support research to reconstruct precipitation and snowpack patterns in the south-central Sierra Nevada, California during the Holocene epoch. The project aims to use an interdisciplinary approach involving geomorphic field investigations, luminescence geochronology, and hydrologic modeling to develop detailed water-level records and understand long-term climate variability in...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) aims to reduce uncertainties in tree-ring records of wet extremes to better interpret past climate and plan for future changes. The total funding amount is $324,677, with an award date of July 1, 2024 and an ultimate completion date of June 30, 2027. The key products and services to be delivered under this grant include: Using dendrometers (instruments that record tree growth in real-time) to...
- This $202,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) aims to analyze precipitation variability and extreme rainfall events in Southern California. The project will combine tree-ring data, historical weather observations, and climate model simulations to reconstruct the range of precipitation variability over time in this region, with a focus on atmospheric rivers and extreme precipitation. The research goals include quantifying the...
- This $211,743 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) aims to reduce uncertainties in tree-ring records of wet extremes to aid interpretations of past climate and plan for future changes. The primary objectives are to: Use dendrometers to measure how tree growth responds to changes in precipitation frequency, intensity, and timing at sites in the AmeriFlux network. Reconstruct wet extremes of precipitation from previously collected tree-ring...
- The National Science Foundation's Division of Earth Sciences awarded a $464,646 Project Grant to the University of Wyoming beginning August 15, 2025 and extending through July 31, 2028, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). This collaborative research initiative will produce geological evidence and scientific analysis quantifying past changes in precipitation, evaporation, and snowmelt patterns in the Rocky Mountains over the 15,000 years since the last ice age. The project will...
- This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $800,670 will support research to extend tree-ring based reconstructions of Atlantic Gulf Basin hydroclimate over the Common Era. Led by the University of Arizona with completion expected by June 2025, the project aims to collect old-growth bald cypress and longleaf pine samples from trees harvested in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These extended tree-ring chronologies will be used to develop regional and seasonal hydroclimate...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $542,834 Project Grant to the University of Arizona under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research reconstructing Southern Rocky Mountains warm season temperatures over the past 2,000 years. The research aims to develop a temperature reconstruction using bristlecone pine from the Rio Grande headwaters region, augmented with updated hydroclimate reconstructions, to evaluate long-term regional temperature and hydroclimate...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Earth Sciences provides $294,998 to San Diego State University Research Foundation from September 2021 through August 2025. The funding supports the development of a framework to predict hydrologic processes at continental scales under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The Geosciences program aims to expand understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences....
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) award under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) is funding a $216,562 collaborative research project between the University of Southern California (USC) and George Mason University to characterize hydroclimate changes over Western North America and Europe in response to the global warmth of the Middle Miocene period (around 15 million years ago). The project aims to understand how water availability may change in a warming climate by investigating...
The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded Hydrologic Research Center $235,056 on August 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to reconstruct three millennia of hydroclimatic variability in the Western United States using giant sequoia tree rings. The project will update and expand a network of giant sequoia tree-ring chronologies across the Southern Sierra Nevada, combining dendrochronological data with hydrologic models to reconstruct snow water equivalent, soil moisture, precipitation, drought, and watershed-scale hydroclimate over the past 3,000 years. By placing recent drought and climate whiplash into a multimillennial context, the work will characterize the frequency, magnitude, and persistence of hydroclimatic extremes and develop new paleo-hydroclimatological methods to assess spatial and temporal variability at watershed scales. The project includes STEM workforce training and outreach to practitioners and the public. Performance occurs in San Diego, California, with work proceeding through July 31, 2029.
