Project Grant 2607517
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $554,710 project grant to Trustees of Boston College under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to conduct collaborative research on early number development from July 15, 2022 to June 30, 2026. The research will involve over 3,000 children aged 2 to 5 years old across 28 U.S. states and 27 countries to investigate how toddlers and preschoolers perceive, reason about, and communicate numbers. Two foundational studies will examine number perception...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $937,260 Project Grant to The Regents of the University of Colorado under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to study how multi-digit number names and written symbols guide early elementary students' attention, memory, and place value learning. Over three years from July 2022 to June 2025, the University will conduct three experimental studies with kindergarteners using eye-tracking technology, assessments of students' place value knowledge, and...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded New York University $749,996 under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) on August 1, 2026, to conduct a longitudinal study investigating how children develop field-specific ability beliefs about mathematics—the conviction that success in math requires exceptional intellectual talent or "brilliance." The research will track 220 children ages 6 to 7 and one parent or guardian...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) will support a $496,337 research project to assess the malleability and impact of mature number sense among 3rd through 8th grade students. The research team at the University of Notre Dame will study how students' mature number sense - their ability to make sense of numbers, notice patterns, and flexibly select problem-solving strategies - changes over the course of an academic year and...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences awarded the Strategic Education Research Partnership Institute $316,500 on July 1, 2026, under the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences program (CFDA 47.075) to compile a comprehensive database of student learning and outcome data for mathematical content in grades 4–10. The project develops AI-enabled assessment tools to analyze student handwritten responses to math problems, automatically identify...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded Northwestern University $830,069 on September 15, 2025, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to design and iteratively develop an elementary after-school mathematics program that expands conceptions of mathematics for both teachers and students. The project operates as a five-year design-based study across two elementary school sites in Evanston, Illinois, running through August 31,...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded the University of Notre Dame $697,279 on August 15, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop and validate an adaptive assessment system measuring mature number sense for students in grades 3–12. The project will expand and calibrate a large item bank through expert review, teacher partnerships, student think-aloud protocols, and a multi-agent large language model...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded Education Development Center, Inc. (doing business as E D C) $649,574 on August 15, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to investigate how young children develop foundational data science knowledge and reasoning during preschool. E D C will conduct classroom teaching experiments and cognitive interviews with preschool-age children attending Head Start programs to develop...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded Brown University $690,697 under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) on August 15, 2026. The recipient will conduct experimental research examining how children aged 4 to 7 develop scientific reasoning through parent-child interaction and through interaction with artificial intelligence agents. The project will administer age-appropriate scientific reasoning problems to children under...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded UC San Diego a $750,942 Project Grant (CFDA 47.076, STEM Education program) effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2028. This research initiative investigates numerical development in children by examining how young learners acquire counting and numeracy skills through non-visual sensory modalities, including touch and hearing. The research team will...
The National Science Foundation Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings awarded Wesleyan University $736,381 on August 1, 2026, to examine left digit bias in numerical magnitude judgments and develop interventions to reduce it under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076). The project will conduct ten studies investigating how people disproportionately weight the leftmost digit when estimating the size of numbers—a bias that emerges by age nine and persists into adulthood and that is revealed through number line estimation tasks used in K–12 mathematics classrooms. Studies 1 through 3 will use correlational approaches with college students and 9- to 14-year-old children to determine whether left digit bias in number line estimation predicts other mathematical skills and whether it predicts similar bias in everyday numerical judgment and decision-making contexts. Studies 4 through 6 will investigate whether left digit bias is malleable or fixed once it emerges. The project will also develop and test a training intervention aimed at reducing the bias, with potential applications to mathematics learning. Performance occurs in Middletown, Connecticut. The period of performance runs through July 31, 2029.
