Project Grant 2606091
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded The Research Foundation For The State University Of New York (RF SUNY) $713,630 on October 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to build an open science community and establish shared standards and tools for biomarker research in the geosciences. The project will develop community-driven standards for biomarker data—chemicals produced by organisms that provide evidence of Earth's distant past—and create a...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Wisconsin - Madison $156,054 on October 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to build an open science community and establish shared standards and tools for biomarker research. Biomarkers are chemicals produced by organisms that provide evidence of Earth's past environmental changes; differences across laboratories currently hinder integrated data analyses. The recipient will develop...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Integrative Activities awarded a $211,813 project grant to the University of Southern California (USC) for the "Collaborative Research: GEO OSE TRACK 1: Facilitating Reproducible Open Geoscience" project. This grant is funded under the NSF Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which focuses on expanding fundamental knowledge and understanding of the integrated Earth system through basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. The...
- This $201,076 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (under the CFDA program "Computer and Information Science and Engineering") aims to integrate two data systems, MacroStrat and Sedimentary Geochemistry and Paleoenvironments (SGP), to better link geochemical proxy records to crustal stratigraphic context. Key activities include: Connecting SGP sample data to MacroStrat's geologic units and columns Developing new web...
- This $304,397 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund the development of sensitive and time-saving analytical methods to quantify long chain alkenones in ocean and lake environments. Alkenones are biomarkers produced exclusively by certain microalgae that provide insights into past climate and aquatic productivity when measured in geological sediments. The awardee, Brown University, will optimize reversed phase high performance liquid...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded $397,850 to the Center For Open Science, Inc. on August 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to coordinate researcher training, institutional support, and publication practices across academic institutions, libraries, and scientific publishers throughout the United States to advance open and reproducible research in the geosciences. The project will deliver systematic outreach and training activities at...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Southern California $599,033 on August 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to coordinate researcher training, institutional support, and publication practices across academic institutions, libraries, and scientific publishers throughout the United States to strengthen open and reproducible research in the geosciences. The project will deliver systematic outreach and training activities...
- The National Science Foundation awarded Bigelow Laboratory For Ocean Sciences a $189,353 project grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The three-year award will support collaborative research titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: SOURCES AND TRANSFORMATIONS OF EXPORT PRODUCTION: A NOVEL 50-YEAR RECORD OF PELAGIC-BENTHIC COUPLING FROM CORAL AND PLANKTON BIOARCHIVES." The research aims to strengthen understanding of the integrated Earth system by expanding knowledge of...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded the Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM) a $843,830 Project Grant under the Geosciences (CFDA 47.050) program. The goal of this 2-year award is to develop strategies for creating more inclusive pathways into geoscience careers, particularly targeting underserved youth. The "Connecting Opportunities for Research Experiences (CORE) in the Geosciences" project will leverage SMM's expertise in STEM education and community engagement through...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences awarded the University of Southern California $753,971 on October 1, 2025, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to investigate enzyme stability in deep subsurface sediments and its role in microbial community assembly. The research tests the hypothesis that unusually stable enzymes enable microbes living in ocean floor sediments to survive across timescales of decades to millennia, compared to microbial turnover in hours or days...
COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: GEO OSE TRACK 2: BUILDING AN OPEN SCIENCE COMMUNITY AND SERVICES FOR BIOMARKER RESEARCHERS IN THE GEOSCIENCES -BIOMARKERS ARE CHEMICALS THAT ARE PRODUCED BY ORGANISMS AND THAT PROVIDE EVIDENCE OF HOW EARTH CHANGED IN THE DISTANT PAST. THE NUMBER OF BIOMARKER LABORATORIES AND THE DATA THEY GENERATE ARE INCREASING RAPIDLY. HOWEVER, DIFFERENCES ACROSS LABORATORIES HINDER INTEGRATED DATA ANALYSES. THIS PROJECT WILL BUILD AN OPEN SCIENCE COMMUNITY THAT DEVELOPS SHARED STANDARDS AND TOOLS FOR BIOMARKER RESEARCH. THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT COLLABORATION ACROSS INSTITUTIONS AND CAREER STAGES. IT WILL PROVIDE WORKFORCE TRAINING FOR STUDENTS AND EARLY-CAREER RESEARCHERS AND STRENGTHEN THE RESOURCES NEEDED FOR DISCOVERIES ABOUT EARTH SYSTEMS. BY PROVIDING BROAD ACCESS TO STANDARDIZED, INTEGRATED DATA, THE PROJECT WILL ALSO SUPPORT INNOVATION IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. THIS PROJECT WILL ESTABLISH COMMUNITY-DRIVEN STANDARDS FOR BIOMARKER DATA AND WILL DEVELOP A MODULAR WORKFLOW THAT LINKS SAMPLE ANALYSIS AND DATA PROCESSING TO SIMPLIFY REPORTING. STANDARDS AND SERVICES WILL BE DEVELOPED WITH EXISTING GEOSCIENTIFIC OPEN-ACCESS DATABASES INCLUDING THE NEOTOMA PALEOECOLOGY DATABASE AND LINKED EARTH. BIOMARKER DATA WILL BE ADDED TO THESE DATABASES. COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS, PILOT ANALYSES, AND VISIONING ACTIVITIES WILL ADVANCE ADOPTION OF THESE RESOURCES AND DEMONSTRATE THEIR SCIENTIFIC VALUE. THESE EFFORTS WILL ENABLE SYNTHESIS OF BIOMARKER DATA ACROSS GEOSCIENCE APPLICATIONS. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
