Description

The overall long-term goal of this project is to support a biological control program against the harrisia cactus mealybug (hypogeococcus SP.) (HCM), an invasive insect causing severe damage to cactus populations in puerto rico. The HCM pest negatively impacts dry forest ecosystems by decimating host cacti, disrupting native wildlife, and damaging cultivated cactus plantations in the southern and western regions of the island. The specific purpose of this project is to enhance the project s operational capacity to maintain and expand insect colonies in the puerto rico quarantine laboratory to ensure readiness for future release efforts of HCM natural enemies.
