Project Grant 2553951
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports a collaborative research project to characterize borehole breakouts in anisotropic materials, both in the laboratory and in natural settings. The $180,350 award to Carleton College will involve two primary research methods: 1) physical experiments using analog materials like sand, gelatin, and wax to investigate how rock layering and anisotropy impact breakout formation, and 2) analysis...
- Summary of Federal Project Grant Award The National Science Foundation's Division of Earth Sciences (Geosciences program, CFDA 47.050) awarded $114,619 to Carleton College on April 15, 2026, to support the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) Early Career Geoscience Faculty Workshop through March 31, 2029. The award funds an annual five-day workshop that brings together early-career faculty in atmospheric, ocean, and solid Earth sciences to integrate evidence-based teaching,...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) provides $470,318 to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from October 2021 through December 2022. The award will support collaborative research to better understand the contribution of crustal deformation to present-day tectonics at convergent margins like the southern Cascadia forearc. Researchers will utilize multiple geochronologic techniques to develop a record of exhumation and erosion in...
- This $228,331 National Science Foundation project grant supports collaborative research to understand the evolution of continental lithosphere beneath New England through geologic time. Funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), the research team will employ seismic imaging techniques and analyze geologic structures exposed at the surface to illuminate plate tectonic processes that have shaped the region. Specifically, the investigators from the University of Vermont and partner...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences supports a collaborative research project led by Cal Poly Humboldt Sponsored Programs Foundation, a Hispanic Serving Institution. The $296,973 award, effective July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026, will fund an undergraduate cohort experience to investigate the tectonic and geologic history of the Klamath Mountains region of the Pacific Northwest. The research team will apply advanced thermochronology...
- This Project Grant award of $390,717 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Earth Sciences (CFDA 47.050 - Geosciences) to the Regents of the University of Michigan will support research to understand how tectonic plate boundaries evolve over time, particularly the transition from subduction to oblique collision occurring in central New Zealand. The key research tasks include: 1) characterizing the rate and kinematics of shallow faulting near the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake; 2)...
- This $150,388 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund collaborative research to reconstruct the missing geological record of late Proterozoic tectonism along the western margin of Laurentia using deep-time thermochronology. Three early-career researchers and twelve students from multiple universities will investigate ancient supercontinent breakup using geochemical signatures from rock heating and cooling during deposition and erosion....
- This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $236,141 supports research by Columbia University under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) from May 15, 2022 to April 30, 2025. The research aims to reconstruct the missing geological record of late Proterozoic tectonism along the western margin of Laurentia using low-temperature thermochronology. Researchers will study the thermal imprint of sedimentary cover on basement rocks beneath major unconformities to fill a one-billion-year gap in the...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program Project Grant award of $100,000 to James Madison University (JMU) will initiate a travel grant program to enable up to 50 early-to-mid career faculty from under-resourced institutions, such as emerging research institutions (ERIs), minority-serving institutions (MSIs), and community colleges, to attend the 2024 Fall American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual Meeting. In addition to a travel stipend, the awardees will participate in...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Project Grant under the Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) provides $185,478.00 in funding to Northern Illinois University (NIU) to evaluate tectonic models for the western United States Cordillera region through a detailed study of the Pelona-Orocopia-Rand schist. The researchers will use modern analytical techniques, including Raman spectroscopy, bulk chemical analysis, and pressure-temperature modeling, to determine the age, pressure, and temperature...
CONFERENCE: 8TH BIENNIAL STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY AND TECTONICS FORUM -THIS AWARD SUPPORTS THE 8TH BIENNIAL STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY AND TECTONICS FORUM AT CARLETON COLLEGE. THE CONFERENCE WILL HELP RESEARCHERS BETTER UNDERSTAND PROCESSES THAT CAUSE NATURAL HAZARDS LIKE EARTHQUAKES. THE VOLUNTEER LED MEETING WILL ALSO INCLUDE TIME FOR MENTORING, NETWORKING, AND COMMUNITY BUILDING. THE 8TH BIENNIAL STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY AND TECTONICS FORUM WILL BE HELD AT CARLETON COLLEGE IN AUGUST, 2026. THE MEETING BRINGS TOGETHER STUDENTS, EDUCATORS, AND RESEARCHERS FOR A THREE-DAY CONFERENCE BOOKENDED BY PRE- AND POST-MEETING FIELD TRIPS, WORKSHOPS, AND SHORT COURSES. THE GOALS OF THIS MEETING ARE TO (1) SHARE NEW ADVANCES AND INSIGHTS?BOTH IN TERMS OF RESEARCH AND TEACHING?IN STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY AND TECTONICS; (2) HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO DISCUSS THE FUTURE OF THE FIELD AS NEW TOOLS AND NEW PROBLEMS EMERGE; (3) FACILITATE TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT; AND (4) FOSTER NETWORKING TO DEVELOP AND SUPPORT A VIBRANT SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.- SUBAWARDS ARE NOT PLANNED FOR THIS AWARD.
