MODERN LABORATORY EQUIPMENT FOR GEOLOGIC AND AGRICULTURAL STUDIES -THIS AWARD SUPPORTS THE PURCHASE OF MODERN LABORATORY EQUIPMENT FOR THE GEOLOGY AND AGRICULTURE PROGRAMS AT MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY-NORTHERN. THE EQUIPMENT WILL TRANSFORM HOW STUDENTS EXPERIENCE GEOSCIENCES, ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES, AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE. BY CONNECTING CLASSROOM CONCEPTS TO REAL-WORLD CHALLENGES SUCH AS SOIL HEALTH, WATER QUALITY, AND LAND MANAGEMENT, THE PROJECT WILL IMPROVE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, RETENTION, AND CAREER READINESS. THE PROJECT WILL ENHANCE TRAINING ALIGNED WITH WORKFORCE NEEDS IN GEOSCIENCE AND AGRICULTURE. THIS PROJECT WILL UPGRADE LABORATORY AND FIELD CAPABILITIES. NEW INSTRUMENTATION WILL INCLUDE A POLARIZING MICROSCOPE, PORTABLE X-RAY FLUORESCENCE (PXRF) ANALYZER, THIN-SECTION PREPARATION SYSTEM, GPS RTK UNIT, SOIL AND WATER SENSORS, AND AN AUGMENTED REALITY SANDBOX. THESE TOOLS WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO CURRICULA ACROSS GEOLOGY, BIOLOGY, AND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE AND SUPPORT UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AND CAPSTONE PROJECTS. STUDENTS WILL CONDUCT GEOCHEMICAL, MINERALOGICAL, HYDROLOGICAL, AND ECOLOGICAL ANALYSES USING PROFESSIONAL-GRADE EQUIPMENT. THE PROJECT WILL ENHANCE TRAINING ALIGNED WITH WORKFORCE NEEDS. BROADER IMPACTS INCLUDE WORKFORCE PREPARATION IN GEOSCIENCE AND AGRICULTURE, K?12 TEACHER TRAINING, AND REGIONAL COLLABORATION TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE LAND AND WATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT.
