- The National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education awarded Creighton University $399,454 on October 1, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to develop and empirically evaluate a transferable framework for sustainable, student-led open-source software development within service-learning contexts. The project will develop a sustainability-centered approach enabling students to create technology products for community partners through iterative development,...
The National Science Foundation Division of Undergraduate Education awarded Oregon State University $222,112 on October 1, 2026, under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to conduct a multisite comparison of embedding socially responsible design across the undergraduate computer science curriculum. The project integrates socially responsible design (SRD) practices into four-year computer science curricula at four universities across Colorado, New Jersey, Oregon, and Virginia—spanning large and small, rural and urban, private and public, R1 and R2 institutions with both in-person and online delivery. Faculty will teach minimal, incremental elements of SRD content in selected courses, enabling students to apply these practices to software development in their classes and carry the skills into future careers. The project targets up to 30,000 STEM students and aims to improve student academic performance as measured by grades, retention, and software design outcomes, strengthen the educational climate of each program, and increase national capacity for STEM student learning through improved retention. This work extends earlier single-site pilot work at a public urban university to generalize the approach across diverse institutional contexts and SRD methods. Performance occurs in Corvallis, Oregon, with an ultimate completion date of September 30, 2029. The award is a Project Grant with $222,112 obligated.
