This Project Grant award of $126,043.00, provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF) under the STEM Education (CFDA 47.076) program, aims to establish best practices for improving mentorship, learning, and engagement in undergraduate research experiences (UREs) in engineering. The primary goals are to: Implement, adapt, and study the outcomes of an existing toolkit of interventions and best practices that create structured reflection and mentoring activities within engineering UREs across five institutions. Form an Undergraduate Research Excellence Network (UREN) to provide structured training and coaching for URE mentors on adopting the toolkit. Evaluate the implementations through an emergent design studies approach, focusing on student self-assessment, reflective thinking, and mindset, to generate insights on improving learning and engagement in engineering UREs. This award, with a performance period from July 2025 to June 2028, is expected to expand access and improve the quality of mentorship in engineering UREs, as well as provide freely available resources to enhance undergraduate STEM education.
