The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $298,693 Project Grant under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) program (CFDA 47.084) to Terc, Inc. to develop innovative public engagement strategies related to sustainable sanitation solutions. The 18-month project, set to run from October 2024 to March 2026, will pilot survey and facilitated dialogue approaches to gather input from diverse North Carolina residents on their perspectives and preferences for alternative waste management technologies beyond traditional flush toilets. The goal is to increase public understanding and acceptance of sustainable sanitation innovations, especially in communities impacted by wastewater infrastructure challenges during extreme weather events. The project team, which includes experts in sustainability, product design, public service, communication, and STEM education, will work to create visualizations, stories, and design challenges to engage participants in co-designing approaches for managing human waste. The findings will inform a larger market segmentation study on public acceptance of sustainable sanitation solutions.
