This National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) Project Grant award of $2,000,000 to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) aims to develop a scalable, semiconductor-based quantum system to enable large-scale quantum information processing. The key objectives are to: 1) create cryo-compatible CMOS integrated circuits for embedded color centers, 2) develop large-scale integration of color center qubits, 3) integrate piezoelectrically actuated atom-control photonic integrated circuits, and 4) understand error propagation in diamond color center qubits. The ultimate goal is to construct a high-performance prototype quantum system programmed by the electronic and photonic control chips. Additionally, the project includes an outreach effort to build the next generation of scientists in semiconductor manufacturing, systems, and quantum information science. A sub-award of undisclosed amount was provided to The Mitre Corporation to develop visible-wavelength programmable photonic integrated circuits for optical control protocols in quantum systems and model hardware/errors in diamond-based quantum systems. The award period is from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2027.
