The American Institute of Mathematics (AIM) was awarded a $703,950 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to improve the development of high-quality, free, online interactive mathematics textbooks for calculus and linear algebra courses. The two-year project, which began on June 15, 2024, involves collaboration between AIM, teachers, students, and researchers to create engaging interactive textbook questions that target core mathematical concepts and skills. Through three design-based research cycles, the project will document strategies and heuristics for developing interactive textbook questions that make evident patterns of student reasoning. The project aims to integrate these interactive questions into four widely used open-source PreTeXt textbooks hosted on the Runestone Academy learning analytics platform, and evaluate their use in at least 72 courses reaching over 1,200 students. The project addresses the important need to promote student learning through continued engagement with course materials and to provide tools for teachers to leverage the gathered information to inform their instruction.
