Acatechol, Inc. was awarded a $274,982 National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I grant to develop an innovative anti-infective coating for Foley catheters. The project aims to create a hybrid coating that combines biofilm-repellent and antimicrobial properties to provide prolonged resistance against pathogen colonization and catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). This work is being conducted under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) program, which supports the translation of scientific discoveries into commercially viable solutions addressing national challenges. If successful, the proposed catheter technology could significantly reduce infection risks and healthcare costs associated with long-term catheter use, while also having broader applications for other medical devices.
