The National Science Foundation (NSF) Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure awarded a $1,199,623 Project Grant to Merit Network Inc., a nonprofit organization, to develop the Instrumentation for Research and Inter-institutional Security Operations Center (IRIS SOC). The IRIS SOC will monitor network traffic entering and leaving Merit's backbone network, detect and mitigate cyber threats to Merit's member institutions, and provide threat intelligence and vulnerability insights to security analysts and researchers. The project, funded under the NSF's Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program (CFDA 47.070), aims to create a shared cybersecurity infrastructure to enhance the security posture of smaller, under-resourced institutions that are part of Merit's network. The IRIS SOC will leverage advanced monitoring and analytics capabilities to support research and operational activities related to internet freedom, network monitoring, threat intelligence, and security and privacy.
