This $8.689 million National Science Foundation project grant funds the University of Oregon to provide academic, co-curricular and scholarship supports for talented students pursuing associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees in the physical sciences through June 2028. The grant is part of NSF's STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076), which aims to ensure the vitality of the nation's STEM education enterprise. Specifically, the University of Oregon will provide scholarships and mentorship supports to 64 unique low-income students over six years as they progress along pathways from community college through bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry, biochemistry and physics. Lane Community College and Central Oregon Community College will assist as subawardees. The grant also funds a longitudinal study examining how mentorship, internship programs and cohort-building activities impact students' academic engagement, career perceptions and retention in STEM fields. Results will be disseminated to inform other institutions on effective tools for supporting low-socioeconomic students in STEM.
