Project Grant 2200023
- This National Science Foundation project grant award of $536,591 provides funding for the 27th Annual Globe Meeting from April 1, 2023 through September 30, 2024. The meeting will focus on open science and how the Globe Program's openly accessible database of over 233 million environmental measurements exemplifies the principles of open data accessibility, a priority of the sponsoring Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). Sessions will explore mobilizing data collection beyond borders, expanding...
- This Project Grant award of $120,910 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) will support a hybrid conference on "MEE HUBS: A Hybrid Conference in Microbial Ecology and Evolution" to be held from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2025. The conference will integrate microbiology, evolutionary ecology, physics, and mathematics to drive innovation in fundamental and applied research questions related to microbiomes. The project will develop a...
- This National Science Foundation Project Grant award of $293,033 provides funding from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025 to examine how plant diversity impacts the resilience of forests to climate change. The award is made through the Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) to The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. The project will analyze field data, forest inventories,...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports collaborative research to study the effects of climate change on mammalian functional diversity. The $205,877 award to the Stony Brook University Research Foundation will generate 3D datasets from micro-CT scans of mammalian fossils and develop new AI tools to rapidly analyze functional traits like dental topography and limb morphology. This will characterize changes in mammalian functional...
- This Project Grant award of $125,000.00 from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports the "RCN: Diversity in Ecology, Evolution, Marine Science and Disease (RCN: DEEMD)" initiative at Agnes Scott College. The overall goal is to promote collaboration and equity in the fields of ecology, evolution, marine science, and emerging infectious disease research. Key activities include in-person workshops, virtual working groups, a mentorship program, and a...
- This $419,234 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) supports research to study the effects of climate change on mammalian functional diversity over long timescales. Key objectives include: Analyzing changes in mammal functional diversity, floral composition, and abiotic factors like temperature before, during, and after the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) climate event in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. This will elucidate the...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF), through its Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050), awarded a $129,436 Project Grant to the University of Illinois to convene an international summit in Fall 2024 to discuss the feasibility of creating a special-purpose computational system for frontier Earth system science and climate projection. The scientific objectives of this project are to bring together international leaders from academia, industry, government, and non-profit organizations to examine...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $249,966 Project Grant under the STEM Education program (CFDA 47.076) to the Space Science Institute, a nonprofit organization based in Boulder, Colorado. The grant will support a national conference that explores the role of public libraries in addressing local climate impacts. The conference will convene 30 library leaders, climate experts, public health professionals, and STEM educators to examine climate-related programming in libraries and how...
- This Project Grant award, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074), aims to improve understanding of how forest structure and function influence "ecological climate" - the climate experienced by organisms within forest canopies. The $424,492 project, running from August 2024 to July 2028, will integrate data from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) into advanced forest canopy models to evaluate how forest diversity...
- This $793,094 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Biological Sciences program will fund research at the University of Colorado to quantify how global environmental changes, such as drought and warming, impact biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The project aims to transform understanding of the causal mechanisms by which biodiversity responds to global change drivers and how those biodiversity changes then feed back to alter productivity and other ecosystem...
BIODIVERSITY, CONSERVATION SCIENCE, AND CLIMATE CHANGE -THIS GRANT SUPPORTS THE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR SCIENCE AND THE ENVIRONMENT (NOW DOING BUSINESS AS GLOBAL COUNCIL FOR SCIENCE AND THE ENVIRONMENT {GCSE}) IN THE DELIVERY OF THE 2022 ANNUAL CONFERENCE. THE THEME OF THE 2022 ANNUAL CONFERENCE IS BIODIVERSITY, CONSERVATION SCIENCE, AND CLIMATE CHANGE AND WILL BE HELD VIRTUALLY ON JUNE 21-24, 2022. THE CONFERENCE WILL EXPLORE THE COMPLEX INTERACTIONS BETWEEN BIODIVERSITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE, AND HOW THESE COMPLEXITIES FACTOR INTO CONSERVATION STRATEGIES TO PROTECT GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY. A MAIN GOAL OF THE CONFERENCE IS TO REFRAME THE TIPPING POINTS DIALOGUE TO EMPHASIZE THE NECESSITY FOR REGENERATIVE THINKING, SOLUTION CREATION AND ACTION. THE CONFERENCE WILL HIGHLIGHT SUCCESS STORIES IN CONSERVATION THAT SHOULD HELP GUIDE US TOWARD DISCOVERING MORE SCIENCE AND EVIDENCE-BASED SOLUTIONS TO CONSERVATION CHALLENGES. THE THEME OF THE GCSE 2022 ANNUAL CONFERENCE, BIODIVERSITY, CONSERVATION SCIENCE, AND CLIMATE CHANGE, ENCOURAGES SCIENTISTS, DECISION-MAKERS, CIVIL SOCIETY LEADERS AND PRACTITIONERS, AND YOUTH TO RETHINK THE TRADITIONAL TIPPING POINTS NARRATIVE IN ORDER TO ADDRESS CRUCIAL ISSUES IMPACTING BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION AND CLIMATE CHANGE. THE MOST RECENT REPORT OF THE INTERGOVERNMENTAL PANEL ON CLIMATE CHANGE (IPCC) MAKES IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT HUMANITY IS RAPIDLY RUNNING OUT OF TIME TO CONFRONT THE CLIMATE CRISIS BEFORE GLOBAL WARMING MAKES CONSERVING GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY MUCH HARDER?IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE. THE CENTRAL OBJECTIVE OF THE CONFERENCE, IS TO IDENTIFY PRACTICAL WAYS TO ENGAGE IN REGENERATIVE DECISION SPACES REGARDING CLIMATE SOLUTIONS THAT PROTECT LIFE ON EARTH AND ENSURE A SUSTAINABLE AND RESILIENT FUTURE FOR HUMANITY ITSELF. THIS AWARD REFLECTS NSF'S STATUTORY MISSION AND HAS BEEN DEEMED WORTHY OF SUPPORT THROUGH EVALUATION USING THE FOUNDATION'S INTELLECTUAL MERIT AND BROADER IMPACTS REVIEW CRITERIA.
