Description

The COA is a non-profit 501(C)(3) corporation operating as a service organization in luna county, new mexico since 1976. The COA has been the leader in implementing services and programs in luna county with a strong mission of promoting independence, preserving dignity, and enhancing the quality of life for a diverse population of older adults and people with disabilities in our county. Our organization advocates and provides supportive person-to-person services to older, low-income adults who have health and functional limitations, enabling them to live independently for as long as possible in a dignified manner within our community. The COA currently offers opportunities for older adults through programs like the senior employment program, the foster grandparent, senior companion and retired senior volunteer programs. For the sponsor organization's rsvp project, out of 135 volunteers, an estimated eighty-nine (89) volunteers will provide service within the primary focus area of "health futures": for our identified "programming for impact" stations in the community. Volunteers will provide critical service activities to include providing coordination of transportation for health care, food provisions, and assistance with housing and utility provisions. At the end of a twelve month performance period, the anticipated outcomes for the three "programming for impact" stations will be the following: 1)deming senior center: participants/clients receive assistance with transportation to doctor appointments/grocery shopping, assistance with access to food resources and healthy aging initiatives to include physical activity. 2) transforming luna county (TLC): clients receive critical assistance with housing issues, utility expense and food. The need for this service is critical for clients to remain in the comfort of their homes without the fear of premature institutionalization. 3) helping hands: clients receive continued assistance with food issues. Luna county is listed as the poorest county in new mexico and also has the highest unemployment in new mexico. Clients will have the relief of knowing when and where their next meal will come from. The cncs federal investment to the deming luna county rsvp program is $75,000 dollars. The project will be supplemented with state, local and in-kind funds. The the state share will be $22,500. The program will receive an additional $5,866 from the city of deming as in kind. These amounts will total $97,500
