AN ESTIMATED 450 RSVP VOLUNTEERS WILL SERVE. OF THIS NUMBER, 130 RSVP VOLUNTEERS WILL BE PLACED IN OUTCOME ASSIGNMENTS. SOME OF THEIR SERVICE ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE PREPARING TAXES FOR THE ELDERLY, HELPING COOK COUNTY SHERIFF'S POLICE ACADEMY RECRUITS IMPROVE VICTIM INTERVIEWING AND REPORT WRITING SKILLS, SUPPORTING VETERANS AND MILITARY FAMILIES AT THE EDWARD HINES, JR. VETERAN AFFAIRS HOSPITAL, AND HELPING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) STUDENTS BECOME COMFORTABLE WITH CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH. THE PRIMARY FOCUS AREA OF THIS PROJECT IS ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY. AT THE END OF THE THREE-YEAR GRANT, 50 VOLUNTEERS WILL HAVE HELPED TAXPAYERS AGED 60 AND OLDER FROM LOW- TO MODERATE-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS COMPLETE AND FILE THEIR STATE AND FEDERAL INCOME TAX RETURNS; 50 VOLUNTEERS WILL HAVE HELPED COOK COUNTY SHERIFF'S POLICE ACADEMY RECRUITS IMPROVE THEIR VICTIM INTERVIEWING AND REPORT WRITING SKILLS; AND 30 VOLUNTEERS WILL HAVE HELPED ESL STUDENTS BECOME COMFORTABLE ENOUGH WITH THEIR ENGLISH CONVERSATIONAL SKILLS TO FIND EMPLOYMENT OR RECEIVE A PROMOTION. THE CNCS FEDERAL INVESTMENT OF $75,000 WILL BE SUPPLEMENTED BY $136,140 IN FUNDING FROM TRITON COLLEGE ($103,876), THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT ON AGING ($29,264), AND LEYDEN TOWNSHIP ($3,000).
