THE TOTAL GEOGRAPHIC AREA COVERED BY DCS IS 4,520 SQUARE MILES, WITH A TOTAL POPULATION OF 122,974. THE DCS SERVICE AREA IS PRIMARILY RURAL WITH THE LARGEST CITY BEING HANNIBAL, IN MARION/RALLS COUNTY WITH A POPULATION OF 28,858. THIS GRANT WOULD INCLUDE CLARK COUNTY, MO INTO THE DCS SERVICE AREA (POPULATION: 6,860) THE AVERAGE FAMILY INCOME LEVEL FOR THE SERVICE AREA OF THIS GRANT IS $63,212, ABOUT $17,000 LESS THAN THE STATE AVERAGE. EDUCATION, SOCIAL SERVICES, AND HEALTH CARE EMPLOY THE GREATEST PERCENTAGE OF WORKING PEOPLE WHO ARE 16 YEARS AND OLDER. THESE OCCUPATIONS ARE FOLLOWED CLOSELY BY MANUFACTURING AND RETAIL TRADE INDUSTRIES. THEIR ACTIVITIES INCLUDE WORKING WITH LOW-INCOME CHILDREN WHO ARE BEHIND THEIR CONTEMPORARIES IN READING (LANGUAGE SKILLS) AND MATH (NUMBER RECOGNITION). OF THE REMAINING VSY, 20 WILL WORK WITH SCHOOL-AGE YOUTH ON ACADEMIC SUCCESS MEASURERS. AN ADDITIONAL 3 VSYS ARE COMMITTED TO MENTORING YOUTH IN WORK FORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS. THE CNCS GRANT AMOUNT OF $273,000 WITH AN ADDITION $32,479 PROVIDED BY DOUGLASS COMMUNITY SERVICES AS AN IN-KIND MATCH.
