The National Science Foundation awarded a $256,000 Small Business Innovation Research Phase I Project Grant to Lumostech, Inc. under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships program (CFDA 47.084) to develop a smart sleep mask and mobile application to improve sleep for adolescents. The one-year project will apply light flash technology delivered through a sleep mask to advance teenagers' circadian phases without disrupting daytime activities. Cognitive behavioral therapy delivered via mobile app will promote earlier bedtimes and better sleep hygiene. The mask and app aim to address chronic sleep deprivation among American youth, which has worsened during the pandemic, by restoring natural sleep patterns. If successful, the solution could benefit the estimated 60 million adolescents and young adults in the U.S. who do not get sufficient sleep and help reduce related health risks and societal costs.
